KRICK ALEXANDRIA STEAM LAUNCH
« on: June 16, 2009, 03:49:02 pm »

Bought this boat recently >:-o fitted with Ceddar Puffin steam plant, its the worst example of model building I have seen for a long time although the steam plant is excellent, had very little use.
The deck planking is atrocious the skeg and rudder were out of alignment by 6mm, (okay if you wanted to steam round in circles)
The ribs inside the hull are not parallel and some are short.
The hull was painted dark blue with runs everywhere
I have had to remove all paint the from the hull (oil based) as I will take it back to white topsides using 2K with copper bottom and red boot topping
I have replaced the skeg and reposition the rudder tube
More pictures when painted

Hi,

You should see my modelmaking ok :-))

Must be disheartening to get a model in that state, however the Victoria is a wonderful hull and has lots of potential so just keep envisioning the end product.

I'm currently modifying one atm see "Intro New Member" thread on this section- added some progress pics last night.

Any chance of having a look at the plant too?

Greg

Edit; PS that cabin roof looks pretty tidy though- is that off this model?

Hi Greg,
Its more disheartening when you take peoples word for what you're buying!
Ive had to dismantle the cabin roof to repaint it, painted hull with new skeg
I should have said its a Cheddar Pintail

Hi Mick,

Youv'e done a fantastic job on the hull, a vast improvement, by the way have you changed the sheer of the hull or was it already like that? Reason I ask is that if you compare the transom on your model to mine and you will notice that yours is at least an inch lower at the stern- this may be an attempt by the profficient model maker who you bought it off to correct an imbalance in the hull forward of midships- something I have found in mine- and instead of ballasting has cut some of the hull off- alternatively if its an attempt by you to improve the sheer and transom I hope it works- does look quite good actually!  ;)

Have you done a float test yet? With power on??? Steam plant looks ok, just worried about construction techniques by said builder- hulls are on thing, but a badly constructed steam plant is dangerous.
The pintail is a lot more compact than the puffin plant in mine so you'll be more free to make a steam launch with a steam engine in it, instead of a steam plant with a model wrapped round it- something i've struggled with!

Gregg, I think you have mistaken mine for a Victoria which is about 5" longer than the Alexandria and 2.5" wider beam and a deeper transom on the Victoria to hang the rudder.

Ian, yes I do now, once bitten twice shy you are never to old to learn but descriptions can be very misleading.

Hi Mick,

That hull is unrecognisable from the one in the first pics- you've got a fantastic finish on the hull- funnily enough in the middle of spraying mine at the mon- just waiting for the last coat to dry!

Looking forward to seeing this boat complete now :-)

Hi Mick,

I've used all Halford's paints- used their 'Plastic Primer'- red underwater, grey above waterline, then sprayed above waterline with 'Citroen Admiral Blue', then spraying 6mm band of 'Ford Matea(?) Green' on the waterline- will post pics on my thread soon.

Always fascinates me how a paint job makes a model SO much better- even though it's just colours!

Hi Greg,
Sounds great, have you considered finishing with 2 pack clear lacquer, sets very hard, can be wet flatted and polished and protects the colours from knocks

Hi Mick,

Sorry I forgot to mention, I used Halford's clear lacquer over the top too.

The Krick Alexandria is more suitable for the Pintail engine because of space. The Krick version Victoria or Borkum has more room for the Puffin engine styles.

Here is pic of an assembled Krick Alexandra with the Pintail Deluxe steam plant. This particular unit was originally part of our corporate display collection and was sold to private collector about 8 years ago. It was originally built in the UK and brought across the pond in the 1990's. We recently got this unit back from the estate including several other Cheddar and John Hemmens units. Full Steam Ahead!
