bbdave,
Royal Mail will take it, but only from the nearest Sorting Office at each end.
So you have to take it to the Sorting Office not Post Office

I've used parcels2go for odd shaped things in the past - worth a quote.

They're quite good - its amazing how you can send a parcel with UPS for £6.99 plus vat, similar good deals with others on their site as well - if you went direct to these couriers you pay a lot more.

I've used them many times now, and for boats on occasion.

One daft thing I encountered the other week was with a particularly large parcel, and Interparcels system advised it was outside of the range they operated. I used another company called ParcelBrokers, and their system with the same price structure booked the collection with DHL and the same guy who collected normally when using Interparcel picked the box up.

https://www.parcel2go.com/

Yes, I have used this site for quotes before, and was shocked at how cheap the big couriers are.

A box of about 2 foot long weighing (I think) 15 kg, cost 6.99 within UK. Albeit 18 months ago. I used DHL 48hr Home service.

Sooo much cheaper than parcel force.

I also used interparcel to send stuff from UK to China.

The great thing about these couriers is that they come to you to collect, so no messing about getting bulky items to the post office.

Great :-)) :-)) :-))

Our firm used to use a franchise called Fastway, then one day the owner locked up the unit with that days parcels in it and went home and gave up the job, took a month or so to get our stuff delivered.
They charge £2.95 a box...
So watch out for small firms cheap is not always best......

Personally, I tend to use Parcel2go,
1. It's collection service,
2. It's all done on-line,
3, they take Paypal.

I used several companies over the years (not commercially) and found that they are all pretty much the same
in that when it works smoothly, no problem, it's only when it goes wrong does the difference between the
'Good' and the 'Bad', (cheap and the big boys) show up!

I ALWAYS make sure the thing is insured for much more than it's worth so very little haggling if it goes wrong.
Also, always used "signed for" deliveries!

I guess this post is mainly to do with fleaBay....  :-)

NB. This company has started advertising eBay this week - https://www.myhermes.co.uk/wps/portal/PN_CTR/

Parcel force would have taken it 15.99 48 hr delivery,so long as the total parcel is 3 m total when adding length to its total girth they will do it no problem.Anything upto 30 kg also, they pick up on time and ive had no problems with them at all.I send all my boats which are 4ft long this way and ive even been over by a few inches on ocasion but never had any charges to pay above the normal cost.I book em all online and havent found a cheaper or better service anywhere. They will even pick up that very same day no worries  :-)).Automatically covered upto £150 unlike royal mail who only cover you for £30 or thereabouts.

Yes, it is easy to forget that Parcel Force is not Royal Mail.
