At next weeks show
« on: November 04, 2006, 09:44:10 pm »

in Leamington Spa is there likely to be any micro/mini lathe demonstrators or sellers?

As this will be my first show I'm not sure what to expect other than an awful lot of model boats to see and photograph.

I've just had to give up woodwork and will sell my Shopsmith soon because I can't carry heavy timber anymore and want to get into small metalwork. I have a friend who was a tool maker who's keen to do it also but not sure how much engineering is included in this kind of show or what machines are available. Does anyone know?

The Leamington Spa show is essentially a model boats event, loads of models on display, loads of traders, but pretty much all in the model boat field.

It is possible that there wil be one or two tool suppliers, perhaps even selling the miniature stuff, Proxon lathes, mills etc.  It's unlikely you'll see anything more substantial at this show.

You really need to be at the Alexandra Palace event in the New Year for serious engineering equipment.  It makes me drool just thinking about it...

Roy

I can not remember anyone selling lathes at the show last year There was a company selling digital readouts for lathes (I remember them as I brought 2 which are now fitted to my lathe) there was also a couple of stands selling tools Proops being the largest. I don't know if they will be there this year. You have just missed the show that had exactly what you are looking for the Midland Model Engineering Exhibition. You should find what your looking for at the London Model Engineering exhibition at Alexandera Palace 19th - 21st Jan 2007 if you can wait that long. If your looking for a small lathe have a look on ebay there are always a few Boxfords or Myfords ML7/Super 7 on there if your after something a bit smaller lookout for a ML4. A good place to find out about how good a lathe is or not is on www.lathes.co.uk

I have a peatol lathe, I can thouroughly recommend it for small, and i mean small! type work. I have made a stuart turner twin oscillator on it with no real problems.
The uk distributor is v helpful and there are lots of accessories available.

Hrere is the link:

Peatol is the UK arm (agent?) of the American company Taig who make a beautiful bench top CNC milling machine.  Just wish I had one....

I have the warco mini lathe, http://www.warco.co.uk/shop.asp?catid=27&cat=Mini+Lathe&pcatid=9#281 but you can get the same lathe from chester and machine mart. At the time warco offered better deal but the one chester are offering at the minute http://www.chesteruk.net/store/lathes.htm the conquest super has digital read outs.

Hope this helps

The first question you need to answer for your self is watt you are planning on doing with the lathe. I have an old southbend 9" thats still very accurate even better now I have the digital readout on the compound and cross slides. I also have an old 1910 Drummond Round bed and this is still a good machine. If you have the space look for something around the size of the Myford or even the silty bigger Boxford.

You may find it worthwhile having a look at APTC - Axminster power tool centre. They do a rather nice little lathe - the Axminster SIEG C1 Micro lathe, priced at £234.82, with a free floor stand! (worth £32.90). Its worth getting their catalogue, They do a small milling machine as well. priced at £197.54, and a really smart one for£234.82 with a matching lathe for the same price.
You can telephone them at (freephone 0800 371822) or online at www.axminster.co.uk. They are based at Axminster in Devon.
I've had quite a few machines from them over the years, mainly woodworking, and found them excellent value for money.
I have no connection with the company - but I do keep their catalogue by my workbench.

I have both the Axminster Micro Lathe and the matching bench top milling machine - both excellent products.  Used for making injection moulding tools for our ship fittings range.
