Great site Geezer! I had a go at making the Terrier when I was a kid, but made a complete hash of it.
At the old Ascot model show a few years ago, I bought 2 Triton kits, and 1 Terrier kit, all umade in mint condition. I havent got around to making them yet.

Indeed! I saw a Triton go for over £35 a few weeks ago on Ebay. That was one of the things that made me want to put this site up. It's one thing collecting the kits - I have no problem with that - but it means that those of us who just want to make up one of the old kits from shop balsa have to pay collectors' prices.

Happy to be of use. I remember making a few Terriers - they were the best runners of the small range. I have a few hints:

1 - the hole where the rudder tube emerges is almost impossible to seal - after a bit of metal contraction and expansion it will leak. My answer was to solder a small washer onto the bottom of the tube so that the gluing area was increased - I have a 35 year old Terrier on which this seal is still good...
2 - the 1/16" deck at the back of the superstructure, and the point at which it touches the main deck, are prone to sagging or warping after a while. Use some scrap to reinforce these areas - a single strip across ought to do it.
3 - I didn't find the machine guns terribly convincing for a MTB. I have not drawn up the 'Terrier Improved Gun' for the site yet, but I include a picture of one I made earlier (a lot earlier, when I was about 10! However, I won't apologise for the poor workmanship - unlike other people who get better, I suspect I am getting worse, so this probably represents a high point for me...:(

I have some copies of the Triton, but when you get round to making the Terrier I would appreciate a scan of the die-cut parts, the instructions and the box-art, if you can manage it....

PS - I seem to be having trouble attaching a jpg - I'll just post this and put a picture up later....

Hi Dodgy,
Hey that guns really neat. The wear on it makes it look weathered, and just right.
Cant wait to see all your info on the web-site. When you have a bit more on the site, think I'll build one inbetween my footy's.
Will post some photos of the build to if you like.
Keep up the good work
cheers

I also have an incomplete early version of the Terrier kit. I bought it on Ebay - the seller said it was complete, but when it arrived it was clear it was not complete; the seller refunded my money, but said to keep the kit. I would say it's about 50% complete, and it has the instructions, propellor and rudder. You can have it for free if you want it.

Now heres the rub------- a kit is made (sic) to be made, be it old new or whatever. Buying a kit to put away for 50 years so its worth a bit more, may work for some, but it senseless to others. Will you really see the benefit (check out most pensions). However finding an old kit unmade, which I'm guesssing most of us have at sometime, is a real gold mine, but then to build or not to build----well build if you have the time, improve, add details, don't build as the kit came, because now you've gained all those years of experience (see pics of my triton). the kits were the years ago to encourage and get people into boats, now days we have came along way, we really should be building, and who knows, there is a whole retro boat meeting weeking just waiting to happen (I'll be there with my fire boat)
So from me, build the b****y things, but add all the know how you have.
Meanwhile I'll try and find the Metcalfe Moonbeam kit I bought 2 years ago and find time to build it-------otherwise-----------well you know Mayhem site 2027 my kit will be worth £3.4 Million

Maninthestreet! It would be churlish to refuse so generous an offer! Please contact me via a private message should you wish to proceed with it, but before you do, I must point out that:

even an incomplete kit is likely to have some value on Ebay
I would not be surprised to find the box alone selling for a tenner, particularly if it is an early one with box-art rather than a photo

but the opportunity to replace the missing parts and do a proper build log to put on the site is overwhelming....

Oh, and I forgot to mention the other reason to keep a partial kit - You should be able to make up the missing parts from the plans on the EeZeBilt site...

Geezer,

I will PM you. The box art is the older stlye with the painting, rather than a photograph. The downside is, it was obviously a Christmas present, as there is a sticker on the right side that says 'Open on Dec. 25th'.

Keen - more data for the Plans section! I see I forgot the thread around the torpedo tubes, and the little rack mount for the machine guns. But then, I was working off childhood memories.....

I hope no one's been relying on the 'beta test' RAF Fire Float plans I put up on the eezebilt site - I've just started doing a test build and found that there's 1/4" missing somewhere at the bow. See the new build log I've put up at http://modelboats.hobby-site.com/RAFPic.html ...

Is that because you used the side elevation as a template? :-)

A similar, though orthoganal reason! (I've always wanted to use that word!).

I used the plan view to draw the base. The base is usually flat on these boats, but in this case it varied in height, as I attempted to model the sweeping chine line of a Vosper.

I knew that I was doing this, so I put lots of construction lines in the sketch to give me the right sizes. But these didn't help, because it became so complicated that I then transferred the wrong lines onto the flat cutting plane....

Ah, well! It's a beta test build, and balsa is just like clay - slap a bit more on if you need it! There's a lot more in Equador.. Assuming you can get to it...I didn't tell you the story of what happened when I was doing mirror-grinding for the Hubble Space Telescope, did I....

The Curlew sheets are now up on http://modelboats.hobby-site.com in the plans section, if anyone's interested...
