Cheddar Puffin Engine-Driven Boiiler Feed Pump?
« on: August 15, 2009, 10:44:34 am »

Hi all,

Anyone know where I can get the engine driven boiler feed pump for the cheddar puffin engine- I have got an early model but I understand the later ones had an extended spigot to put a feed pump drive on?

If anyone knows the whereabouts of one, or they have one and no engine for it and would like me to give them an offer then please get in touch, thanks.

Hi, I don't have a Puffin pump to spare, but I've been told by an ex-Cheddar guy that those oscillating pumps where bad for the engine's bearings. I haven't actually checked this because I have used mine for only a short time so far.
Anyway, in case you don't find one, I think the shaft is long enough on the Puffin to allow you to mount an eccentric-driven pump. You need a really small one though, I think the bore and stroke of the original Cheddar pump were something like 2,5x11 mm, so look for something with a similar volume.

Thanks Kno3,

Are you sure your not thinking of the slide valve engines with regards the eccentric driven pump? There is no-where to put an eccentric on the Puffin- I would have to extend the shaft to do that- the way I want to do it is to put a longer spigot onto the brass disc that holds the big ends of the piston rod.

I'm certainly going to keep it small- already driving a fairly large prop so will need all the power I can get- just need a pump!!! :((

Hi Greg,

On my Puffin, the shaft extends 11 mm out of the engine, so I thought one could fit an eccentric and the coupling there. If not, you can use the (extended) pin on the other side, where the original pump was also connected. I don't know if your Puffin has the extended pin already, mine does. If you need pictures, let me know and I'll send you some.

The alternative would be an independent steam-driven water pump, but I don't know if a fairly small one is commercially available.

I have used one for a few years no problem , and never heard of one, the only time you have a problem with the pumps is if you run two engines in a boat and only one has a pump , they are harder to keep balanced when the one with the pump is under load.
you could go electric driven off a servo, I think Bernard does it very well.

Hi Kno3, Proteus,

No mine doesn't have an extended pin on the brass disc- only about 1mm longer than it needs to be for the big end- and the shaft is flush with the disc on that side and has the UJ on the other side with the bearing.

A steam pump is out of the question- no room, too heavy and too expensive.

A servo pump is a possibility- however the boat is set up for 2-channel and would require everything changing- I also don't have room for another servo- going to be tight with just an engine driven pump.

Have you any pics of your setup Proteus, would like to see how cheddar did it- I can't find any pics on the net.

Ill dig it out, it's not being used at the moment, I may have one that is not fitted yet though and ill find a picture from the cheddar book in the mean time.

Hi I might have the instructions and drawings that come with the Pufin water pump kit, It is unusual for me to throw something like that away. If I remember the kit comes with a new extended crank, if I find it I will scan it and send you a copy.

Hi Abrad,

Yes the instructions Proteus posted says an extended crank came with the kit- this is what I thought.

Thanks for the offer of drawings, but they won't be dimensioned so won't be of any use- designing my own atm as it doesn't look like I'm going to get one from anywhere.
