My other side of RC
« on: August 22, 2009, 01:04:25 pm »

I usually race 1/8th off-road cars, but I've recently started sailing boats as a more sedate passtime to the 40mph hobby that I'm used to.

I also race a couple of the smaller 1/12th Mardaves too.

At the moment I only have the one boat,a RTS Sovremenny class GMD

Hi Dreadstar,
Welcome to the nut house Mayhem!

How long is the life expectancy 1/8th off-road car these days?

It all depends on the track that you're racing on,but that particular buggy has been thrown around some pretty heavy tracks for the past 18 months. She's just undergone a complete rebuild,so we'll see how much life she has left. :-)

Ok then Pete, just for you,a naked shot. Bear in mind that these are probably the most basic of all the R/C cars available, but they're by far the cheapest and toughest. :-)) Properly geared, these wee cars will still do 30mph and on only 4.8V too.

Thanks Dreadstar

It looks just like the Lectricar from the early 80s but they where six cell and in two sticks down the sides, Mardave have not changed the only visable difference from the first of Wes Raynors cars is the front end ,they had a one piece beam. I still have most of my 12th cars from the late 70s till I gave up even have a few lexan cars Pre carpet days and all the early carpet cars all 12th scale, some when carbon fiber was so dear you could only put small stiffening strips on the Cassie. ill do a few pictures.

4.8 volts 4 cell they tried that for a time in 1985ish but we only had 1200mah and I think 1400s Everready batteries came out.

4-cell is all that you're allowed in most of the Mardave stock classes now,but then again we're running on 3700-4600mAh NiMH cells now. There is talk of changing over to 1-cell LiPo's,but that's really just at the testing stage just now. Having said that,at Hinkley's GP this year,Dez Chand ran that very set-up in his car,and he came 2nd in the B-final,so what do I know  :embarrassed:

Wow peter, lectricar 1/12 scale haven't heard of them for ages! my first car was one of those. My dad was given a pre production model to evaluate & he gave it to me to build. That started me on a 25 year course of 12th scale racing. next car was an associated rc12e, then moved on to a Schumacher XL. those were the days. got banned from the house because of the smell from siliconing countless sets of tyres. Also blew up a few sets of cells in the days before automatic chargers existed.

Bought associated rc12i when it went to carpet racing, with a Reedy modified motor & saft bvy cells it was the quickest thing I'd ever seen. Its amazing how the electronics have come on since then, full power by pass relays on the esc & fet steering servos were state of the art.

Unfortunately I lost all my photos somewhere during several house moves, & would love to see some pics of yours.
many thanks Glenn

still got a rc12e plus an I  and a few others still have a  Schumacher XL plus the first lexan car I know Cecil Schumacher well was on the BRCA committee with him for a few years it's supprising how many of the people who where running at the start are still doing it now. even some off the old champs are back ,what area where you in , did you do nationals.
I met mike Reedy a few times when he was over, and got a few motors off him I was the sceutenner at the euro's at Walford. he also came up to runcorn of all places when we had a meeting as he was still over hear.
Oh I still have a bit of chassie off one found a picture not mine

Thanks for the pic Peter, i had forgotten it had an aly chassis. I started at the aly pally car club in London, then moved to milton Keynes. I did many many nationals, have probably had my cars scrutenered by you at some point. I was sponsored by Phil greeno for a few years as a junior. i gave it up because it got too expensive in the end. I tries stock cars & mini stocks, but while they were great fun, i never got the same buzz out of them that i did out of 12th scale.
Still got a couple of mini stocks & a stock car, but not driven them for ages. its got nothing to do with getting my butt kicked by a 7 year old girl last time either  {-)
would love a go of a brushless 12th just to scare myself. but the reactions aren't up to it anymore to try it seriously.
That lectricar looks so simple now, but they were almost unbreakable ( almost !!!)
cheers Glenn

Its good fun RC car racing. Helped my lads set up a club after the one at their school packed up. Within a couple of months we had lots of 12 to 18 year olds. We had enough drivers to do standard and modified (motor) salons and the same with buggies. Eventually the buggies dropped off as we got an influx of adults.

Good stuff.
