Boston Typhoon
« on: September 01, 2009, 05:04:53 pm »

Hello Gentlemen! :-)
I am actually building the Boston Typhoon (kit), but I find the drawing and explanations very light. Is there any one who built this boat, and kind enough to share photos with the right colors and some more details?
Right now I am trying to find my way with outer riveted butt joints on the top hull moulding.
Thank you for your help.
Cheers! :D

Hello Jim!
Thanks for your help! :-))I've just been through your building history! {-) %% I understand that beer is probably the best anti-stress on both sides of the Channel for modelers! ;) Mine will be propelled with Graham Steam engine & Regner double burner. I shall put photos as soon as i know how to do it. :embarrassed:
Cheers!

Wow, KBIO - Steam powered eh! Brave man.
I had a Cheddar Proteus which I purchased specifically for BT, but decided in the end to fit an electric motor - I felt the Proteus deserved to be in a boat where it could be seen, rather than hidden in the bowels of an old trawler.
But good on you - go for steam.  I enjoyed building BT - even if the alchohol intake levels increased because of it.
Have fun

HI KBIO,

I'm on holiday at the mo, but will sort some photos out on my return in 10 days. From memory, the decks are of wood, of course and I stained mine a light colour to represent weathered teak. The insides of the bulwarks, rear of the fo'csle and deck margins would be any colour you like. I'm sure that during the life of the full size vessel it would have gone through a few changes. I painted mine a brown colour,as depicted on Mountfleets own model (can give you the Humbrol Reference when I get back home) but green, off-white, yellow etc. would not look out of place.
Cheers

Good morning! :-)
A long time since I come to visit you and I feel like I ow you some news concerning my Boston Typhoon.
It is all done after rebuiding most of the casting which is a lot of weight.
She sails good but I have to change the Graham for an oscillating PM research engine. Everything is fine and I spend good time sailing.
Photo 1 shows the steam exhausting from the back side.

Phot 2 shows the inside = Regner boiler and MiniSteam Engine. Excellent engine by the way : cheap & reliable.

Last photo : the lac where I sail in Britanny.

It's gotten very nice, congratulations.
Why did you have to change the Graham engine for the PM Research oscillator?

Good afternoon!
Funny weather, so I stay close to my computer.
Concerning my Graham, it's a very nice piece of jewelry, and interesting to built, but:
I runned it w/ air for several hours, flooded w/ oil until the oil comes out cristal clear. The engine runned pretty well in & out , no problem at all. I was satisfied ,so I decided to fit it to the Boston and go to the lac right away.
Was the weather too cold this day or steam not hot enough??? But when the steam condensated inside the engine, it didn't come out normally,I then helped to flow the water out  by turning the propeller in the proper direction.
Sh...! The crankshaft has turn but the piston was water locked.( I now have a nice scratch on the crankshaft). I tightened , more,  the grub screw but my Allen key get loose. (Murphy's law).
I must notice & thank Graham for sending me US spare screws and Allen key free of charge.
For the time being, it is laying on my friend's bench and this winter, we'll see. We shall have to reinforce some points and seal the heads cylinders properly as I find the soft and leaky. This engine is probably too fragile for me : grub screws too small ,......So I get back to the D10 ,that  I shouldn't never leave. O0
I'll post my steam launch later on to get your impression.
Sincerely.

There's one point I don't understand in your problem description: you say the piston got water locked and the grub screw got loose on the crankshaft. BUT, the piston is connected to the crankshaft without grub screws. The crank shaft is solid, so if the piston is blocked, the shaft gets blocked as well. Perhaps you mean the grub screw of the eccentric, but in that case it's hard to think that the valve could be blocked by water.

Perhaps you did something wrong during assembly or have something inside the engine blocking the valve(s)?

Anyway, I've run the same engine under steam with very good results, being even able to run it slow reliably.

Morning KNO!
Perhaps you mean the grub screw of the eccentric, You are right KNO3 : my explanation is confusing.
I think that this grub screw was not tight enough and when I turned the propeller, some water in that cylinder did not come out properlly. I turned the shaft but the piston did not move (full w water). After then ,  one side was out of calibration and the engine could not work any more.
No way to fix on the side of the water.
As I said, the engine was working very well w/ compressed air @ < 1kg and supply cracked open.
I sure did something wrong somewhere and I need to find out what. I'll see this winter.
Cheers! :-))

Hello! :-)
I have a doubt! {:-{ The more I think of this engine and what KNO tells me  , the more I remember that my problem is in fact coming from the in out reverse control shaft. One side slipped.:embarrassed:
Let me get this engine out of the dust later on and I'll come back to you for getting your help to fix it properly. ok2
Cheers!
