On line purchases
« on: September 18, 2009, 03:32:57 am »

Just seeing the preferred way you like to use to make purchases on line. Do you use PAYPAL or do you prefer to load your credit card details into the secure encrypted sites checkout box. Also which way do you see as the most secure and efficient. Also when making an on line purchase do you like the items cost to be in US dollars or in the local currency of the country the item is from, and then you make the mental conversion to Pounds to see the true cost to you. If postage was also shown as a fixed amount, regardless of total purchase amount, to anywhere world wide would this help.
Cheers,  Adrian.

I prefer to use CC.
It is easier for me than having to go throught he double activity of loading all my CC details into paypal first.

I think I have only used paypal once.

I was also shocked to find out how much they charge the vendor.
I don't know about UK, but in China it is 15%.

I prefer Paypal and only use a credit card as a last resort, the least number of people know my card details the better.
Two companies that really annoy me;
Microsoft don't take Paypal!
Royal Mail have a special section for eBay postage .... and they don't take Paypal either?!?!?

I prefer CC, don't need more hassle with another middleman.
Had PayPal once but it all failed in a redo they did a few years ago. Tried to reregister but as my CC is UK based and I live in Sweden their system doesn't seem to be able to handle it.
It is a pain as certain sellers only accept PayPal but I manage without.
As regards currency I do the calculation myself so not really bothered either way.

Hi....don't you think that most suppliers who nominate Paypal as a preferred remittance system.....add the Paypal commision % back into their sell price?...

When I purchased my JMC3H steam engine..... >>:-( the terms were telegraphic transfer of EURO to JMC's banque....OK

Monday morning I complete a withdrawal and complete an AMEX electronic funds transfer [TFX] at my local Credit union................took seven working days to be available in France <*< .....how you ask?

My credit union take the AUD$ from my account & electronically transfer the same it to their account...but also spool up a computer TFX to AMEX @ 0300 the next morning...so by Tuesday morning AMEX has my AUD$....which they duely process to a third party via a spool up a computer TFX @ 0300 the next morning....this International Funds Banking Transfer Entity in OZ repeats the same process after again holding my AUD$ for 24 hours

So now we are up to Thursday & the French counterpart of the International Funds Banking Transfer Entity has my AUD$ but converted into EURO.............you guessed it....they spool up a computer TFX @ 0300 the next morning to JMC's banque....however they keep my AUD$ converted to EURO & spool it into JMC's account at 0300 on Saturday morning

I e-mail JMC saying my AUD$ left OZ electronically last Monday morning....JMC says not here in France on Friday afternoon

Don't you just love those banks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Derek

We prefer Debit Cards (22p per transaction) and Credit Dards (1.5%) but we've found that a significant number of customers ask if they can use Pay Pal. Many of these are non-UK so I guess there's less hassle with currency rates etc; it's also very transparent and pretty quick, too. It would be daft to turn away business from these folk so we accept Pay Pal. We don't add the charges onto the price, either hidden or otherwise.
Martin is right about Royal Mail, so if you are a vendor then I would recommend not using the Pay Pal "Print Post Label" option.
Bank Transfers? Nightmare! (Sorry, Martin!)

A word of warning on Paypal.

If you use Paypal for a purchase and mark it as "gift" you can't claim the money back from Paypal if there is a problem with the transaction.

I have never had one bit of trouble in this country with paypal, set up to draw on my bank account, and I actually prefer to deal with a vendor who uses it. I gave up using credit cards a couple of years ago because of their exhorbitant charges if you didn't settle up straight away, but do use a debit card.

Having dealt a lot with international purchases, especially the US, here are a couple of facts you should consider.

Even though US suppliers state that they accept certain credit cards, most won't touch you with a bargepole if the card wasn't issued by an American bank actually based in the US. You really do have to read the fine print.

Paypal to the US is also a bit of a gamble. They will say that they accept it, but when you come to pay, it usually isn't as straight forwards as you think.
You first have to order your bits, then contact them by email, and they will then issue a payment slip which you then pay with your paypal account. It seems like a lot of them can't do it automatically, as they do in this and other European countries.

You have to go thru all the fine print on their website to even find out if they will export to the UK. It seems that the US government is paranoid about technology being shipped outside of the US, and restrict the suppliers where they can ship to, or the suppliers won't ship outside of the US because of possible comebacks by the government.

This is information that was supplied to me by an American supplier who bent over backwards to help me obtain what I wanted, but ended up not being able to supply because his hands were tied.

I eventually got all the pieces for my twenty year old mo'sickle by going the long way around with Paypal. By the time I had swapped all the info, because of the time zone differences, it took about two days to complete the transaction, then another four weeks before the impossible USPS got the bits to me (to send by courier, the charges would have been more than the cost of the items). I had a $40+ order that fitted into a medium sized Jiffy bag cost $69 in courier postage (and no other postal options were available).

Why's that FLJ?   I've used it several times in the last few weeks, no problem at all.
My annoyance it that you can't do from the Royal mail website that are supplying the service.?!?!?

I found this when i bought a rifle from a guy on another forum whilst reading through their topics , not that i had a problem iit is spot on  :D .
Also beware that if someone makes a purchase from you (not as a gift) then they can claim back their payment if thy say that they have not recieved the goods even if they have  and it dont matter if you have taken the money from your paypal account as they will take it from your funding bank <:( .

There are certain individuals working in the logistics chain who recognize Pay Pal labels and regard them as a good indication that the contents of the package may have some significant worth to them. I was given this warning by another trader who has suffered a fair few losses this way. I guess if you're sending out a dozen packages a day there's more likelihood of having some of them "borrowed".

i prefer credit card payment  via fax but there always seems to be a number too many/not enough in the contact phone number when overseas contacts are involved and takes an age to figure out which one to drop/add so i normally pay by secure sites. havent had any mishaps yet (touch wood)

Bogstandard also is aware of my issue where a dishonest employee of a respected British supplier of silver solder products reused my credit card number from the original twenty UK pound transaction into a second two hundred pound false transaction

I will never purchase from C*P Alloys via CC again......Derek  >>:-( :police:
