Hi Gents I am now at the stage where I would like to fit the deck on my 52" schooner, I would like a deck with a king plank where the planks notch into the king plank, can you please advise me how to do this
does the king plank go down first ? do you mark it before cutting and if so how ? I have tried this and the planks do not match up!
do you lay the uncut king plank on the deck and cut each notch as you lay a plank, they all look different size notches to me then, there must be a technique to this and its bugging me,
 can someone help please

Hi flytier, if you do a search on this forum you will find pictures and text on how its done, I followed them and it worked out fine.

have I got the terminolgy wrong, I have searched the forum for what I know as a king plank there is a lot of info on planking and plenty of words highlighted like marking, making ect where king is part of the word but nothing showing the king plank, I need help not an exercise in typing, come on guys this forum has been so good throughout the build stage I feel I am in the forest but can't see the trees, very frustrated

King plank goes down the centreline and is usually notched to take the ends (butts) of the more outboard planks, which are in turn notched into the margin plank. Make sense? If you have curved planks be prepared to have a lot of wasted wood. As has been said, browse the forum and a wealth of info is already in there. Good luck. BY.

On the Valdivia build the planking is more elaborate, in that both the king plank and the deck planks are cut to make the joint.

this makes it all a lot easier to understand, I see how the joint looks and works, and that you can cut the king plank at the same time as the deck plank you are fitting, I have dry fitted an uncut king plank with a set of small planks curved to suit the shape of the deck, having marked and cut the king plank for the joints is it possible to match and cut each plank

Yes that is possible and may be preferable. As the joints to the king plank can be made more regular.
Please post some pictures of how it is going. I may be doing this myself in the future. It is good to know what works and what doesn't.
