question for Glynn Guest
« on: January 06, 2021, 10:29:26 pm »

Looking at building your HMS Goliath, so in preparation went to my local model shop and showed them you wood list, they said they would struggle to get wood in the sizes you listed, the liteply especially.  Can you tell me where you got you wood from and is it not that hard or is the shop being awkward?

Regards

Lite ply is available up to 1200mm x 600mm, however postage costs may be prohibitive for something this big. More normal sizes 1200mm x 300mm give or take. Lite ply is usually available in3/32", 1/8" and from time to time 1/4" ( or near metric equivalents ). If you get stuck ping me a PM.

If in doubt, look up SLEC www.slecuk.com. Very friendly, good value and not too pricey when it comes to postage etc. :-))

Bob,
A "local model shop" can vary from helpful to useless.
Others have answered your question as well as I could.  My last order from SLEC was received promptly and contained excellent quality wood.

Glyn
thanks for reply, your first line sums it up very well.  Looking forward to having a go at this for something different.

SLEC are one of the good ones.

To be fair to model shops there a thousands of different items that a modeller might use. To stock them all would be vastly expensive and would include a lot of items that you rarely sold.

One of the characteristics of modern society is a much greater choice which equals more possible stock items. In the good old days you started with a lump of wood and a knife. After carving you had a boat (overstated but basically true). Now you have a vast choice.

The rise of rtr models and whole new areas such as drones & helicopters has done nothing to reduce the problem.

So yes some model shops are better than others but they don't have it that easy and very few have unlimited money to stock everything that anyone might want to buy.
