Moonpools

Sorry to be dumb, but not having a nautical background I'm puzzled by 'moonpools' in boat specs. Can someone enlighten me please?

Thanks,

Geoff

I used to have a canal narrowboat, so my right forearm is intimately acqauinted with the weed-hatch, but never heard it called a moon pool.
Thanks guys.
