Deans Marine SY Komet and Steam
« on: October 09, 2009, 11:37:39 pm »

This is my first entry.

I have recently purchased a Deans Marine SY Komet and wish to build it with a steam boiler and 2 steam engines, probably Gage TVR1A's. Has anyone out there converted a comet and if so could they please let me know their experiences.

Many thanks  8)

two gage engines will take a lot of steam so a big boiler, I have seen it with two smaller cheddar engines and a max 2 boiler, ran well it is not a big boat so one gage engine driving via Toothed belt to the two shafts would be plenty of power (and I like a bit of extra power) steam is very good at turning big loads.

There are plenty of engines to choose from if you are only going to use one and for value for money in my opinion yo cannot beat the American engines at present. The Gage engines are lovely little things and I run mine quite satisfactorily on a 6" by 3" horizontal boiler. If you are using one to run both shafts you might want to go to a bit bigger boiler and you would have plenty of room for one. The other possibility if you are definite about running two engines would be to run a double burner large boiler from Maccsteam or even a double drum boiler, almost two small boilers joined together side by side If you do decide to go the single engine way then consider the P & M Research V Twin double acting oscillator (also American). At 1/2" bore and 3/4" stroke, double acting these have plenty of grunt and have the added advantage of having a valve on the front to control speed and reverse with one radio channel. They are also inexpensive. I have imported and sold several and everybody who has one is very happy with it You can buy them direct from the manufacturer  at http://www.pmresearchinc.com/store/product.php?productid=3650&cat=4&page=2 for US$159 but I get them from John at the Steam Chest Ebay store http://stores.shop.ebay.com/The-Steam-Chest__W0QQ_armrsZ1 for the same price and he also does very good deals on lubricators and other bits to go with them. Hope this helps, Ian

with the beam being only 8 1/2 "  (212mm) it would have to be a long boiler for twins,I think there was an article about 4 years ago where someone fitted one with twin steam engines he also had a base with electric power for when he didn't feel like playing steam , Ill look for the article you could always email deans they prob have a copy they can send you or tell you when it was in , it would make it easy to find then

Misty,

I seem to remember John Hemmens advertising a steam plant ready to fit in the Komet when Deans Marine announced the kit some years ago. Might be worth a try.
