What Paint Do I Use For Steam Plant Chimney
« on: October 12, 2009, 11:09:09 am »

Hi Can anyone please tell me what type of paint can I use on my steam plant chimney. I want to paint it white like most are and do I need a special base coat for it with it being made of copper. I had thought of either a good engine or manefold paint, or radiator paint
thanks in advance

Hi Johnathon, and welcome to Mayhem, the biggest collection of nuts outside of Brazil.
May I suggest that you first clean down your chimney and lightly score it with a scouring pad
or light sandpaper then paint it with an enamel undercoat and over that you should use a
paint that is made for radiators or cooking stoves as these normally are white anyway and
available in most DIY stores etc; these topcoats are also gloss medium and will give you
a nice shine to the finished work.   Other members also have their own ideas on this and
will no doubt add to the list.   Good luck mate.   bigH

Right then down to Halfords and buy some scotch pads(trade name)they look like scouring pads BUT are less abrasive, rub the chimney down with these with spirit wipe ....available from a car paint factor.Ok you will have to buy a gallon BUT this product is superb for all your paint prep as it is  a professional degreaser.Alternatively pop into your local car bodyshop and ask nicely to buy a ltr off the lads donation to the coffee fund goes a long way :-))
As for paint Halfords usually sell an etching primer in aerosol and use their primer over it.Top coat as big H states radiator enamel will suffice and will go over the Halfords product with no probs at all, alternatively you could also use a Halfords car paint which is available in Gloss white.Hope this is of help suit yourself which way to go !

Johanthon........as others have suggested........but use 2400 W&D, an automotive brand primer followed by an automotive brand HT [high temperarure] gloss [300 ml srpay cans] ....these sprayed components are then baked in in a conventional kitchen oven

Result sufrace is chemically resistant &  resists any loss of gloss by metal polishes [to the brass bands ] etc .........  :-)).

Nothing worse that polishing the boiler bands & bits ...& then see 1/2 of the paint wipe away  >>:-(  :P Derek

Hi Martin....are you a doubting Thomas  or a WEB moderator  {-) %%

Here are the instructions for the OZ produced VHT ....Engine Enamel 288 degrees C spray

It is an excellant product & provides the qualities or attributes as previously mentioned .....I am sure similar products are available world wide......Derek  :-))

Just explain a little..........I had purchased a few steam items form OS.....& each one stated a 'stove HT baked enamel surface'....well this was correct...but conventional 'Brasso' polish removed the enamel.....hence my path for a superior surface & polishing agent.....Derek :}

OK, here is the polishing agent ....'Metal Magic.........

Well Derek personally i WOULD NOT put anything in my oven except food!!!!!!!!!

Right then yes it mat work for you but my goodness me you ain't half taking a risk with your life and your families, why do I say this well it's quite elementary really when any form of paint is drying it gives off fumes this is the nature of the matterial, now when it is heated it gives off more fumes as it dries, this is a very big recipe for a disaster, oven versus fumes equals BIG BANG.gas ovens by their nature has a naked flame so fumes and naked flame simply don't mix.Electric ovens usually have a fan and these are not designed to be used in a painting application and are NOT safe as they can give off sparks inside themselves and mix fumes with this and you have the same situation a BIG BANG.
Spraybooth manufacturers spend thousands developing safe systems for the automotive sectors and industrial usage as well. You see Derek these are flame proof and electrically safe systems and what you are suggesting, sorry to say this is DANGEROUS to say the least.

Please fellow Mayheme rs don't do it your lives can be seriously compromised by this method let alone your insurance, try explaining to your missus that you were baking a MODEL BOAT PART IN THE OVEN WHEN THE HOUSE BLEW UP....make your own mid up on this

I think as with all things a bit of care and attention and a little thought will ensure that things are kept safe.  I have stove enamelled a couple of small items, i.e. steam engine parts and valve bodies and was advised by the paint manufacturer that heating them to 160 degrees C in the oven was perfectly safe.  The amounts of vapours given off were actually extreemly small as the vast majority was given off in the drying process rather than when you stove it, and no more of a health hazard than breathing in the fumes when the paint was drying on the workbench.

As for the risk of explosion there is more of a risk presented by meats and fish giving off vapours from the hot oils rendered out of the food as it cooks and I've never heard of an oven blowing up because pork fat got into the fan.

Obviously care should be taken no matter what you are doing with hot surfaces whether it is a gas appliance or an electric one and volatile fumes should always be considered with caution but I don't think for a second that this is an issue here and warnings of explosions and big bangs seem a little out of proportion.

Still if anyone has any concrete evidence as to why this may not be a sensible practise then let's hear it, we may all learn something.

Cheddar recommended Just white humbrol enamel spray and the first time you fire it up don't touch it for 24 hours it worked for them for years they did the same with engines again dint try and wipe it down when hot as it smudges for the first firing .. I now use  http://www.phoenix-paints.co.uk/ as they are a better job as used by the live stem model train mob, works very well they now attend some of the boat shows but do mail order they do boiler paint as well that does not come off and stays shinny.

Hi All,

The flues on model plants do not get hot enough to warrant all that effort-

Satin emmulsion is almost fireproof- don't believe me take a blowtorch to a copper pipe painted in emmulsion.

Also I find that Plastikote gloss paints stick absolutely fine with no undercoat- just sand the copper to buff to give a good key then wipe with white spirit just before painting.

Yes you can go down the etch primered oven baked super gloss nuclear resistant furnace door enamel- but why bother???
