Can A Submarine Make Way Upside Down?
« on: December 04, 2009, 08:22:24 pm »

Hello all.

Rather randomly I was just wondering - Can a submarine sail (or is it make way?) upside down, kind of spiral along or carry out loop the loop type manoeuvres?  I realise that these type of antics would probably be a problem for the crew of a full sized sub but would the submarine itself  be capable of them? I'm thinking of both prototype and models, ( I realise the crew is a bit less of a problem on a model :-))

Regards

Yes they can, though they have to constructed and trimmed to function that way. Most trim their subs in such a way that it stays up right at all times. But yes you can fly a sub pretty much like a plane with appropriately sized control surfaces and the correct trim.

On a real sub no, that would be a real problem. You would scram the reactor, let alone that equipment may come loose and do lots of damage. We were not allowed to go beyond a 40 degree angle from bow to stern at any cost. Also when a sub goes beyond a certain amount of dgrees in a turn then the sub will just go on over to it's side and then dive down until it hits the bottom or crush depth. I have been  on 4 different classes of US subs and this is what I had to train to others that drove the sub.

To me that is still a toy sub even though it cost more than an RC sub. I am talking Naval type subs.

Thanks everyone. For all the subs I had thought about all the equipment that might fall free but for the nuclear subs I couldn't decide if the reactors were designed to operate upside down, I figured that they could be designed that way but didn't know if they were.

Navy2000 40 degrees bow to stern - do you mean that if you dive at too steep an angle you can't get out of it?

Yes you can get out of the angle, but the reactor will not like it, you would be exposing a part of the reator that is suppose to remain under the water that is inside of the reactor. You can not have the reactor full to the top with the water you need the room for the water to turn into steam to drive the turbine generators and also for the themgines as well.

Oh I see. Rather like "losing suction" in the K boats then - though that was when the water in the fuel oil tanks got into the feed pipes!

How about in a diesel sub? Presuming everything is Blu-Tack'ed down ;)
