Has he thought about one of the Model Slipway kits such as the RTTL?
Includes motor and is a very pleasant easy build for a first build. Model Slipway instructions are first class for a beginner.

I too would recommend a Model Slipway kit for beginners.
Their kits and instructions are excellent and if you have any problems they are really helpful.
