propellor supplier....any ideas?
« on: October 16, 2009, 06:45:06 pm »

Chaps, I'm after a seven bladed scimitar prop in brass, 30mm diameter, threaded for a 4BA shaft...all I can find are M4 threaded. Any ideas as to where I might find such a thing?

I think Prop Shop do have 4BA taps, but can also confirm that you can use M4.

I did try a M4 prop on the shaft chaps, but there's no way it would ever stay on, even with copious amounts of Loctite...I contacted the shaft manufacturer who confirmed it's a 4BA thread and therefore needs a 4BA prop.

Aren't Prop Shop the ones who never reply to emails or phone calls, or am I thinking of someone else?

Pete, must have crossed posts with you...I'd forgotten all about G.Sitek, he was the man who made my 7 bladed scimitar for the USSBN Patrick Henry, under his old name.

Good man, thanks for that!   :-))

I can highly recommend George Sitek, I ordered some props from him and they were here in Australia within a few days.

I would order a new 4ba  inner shaft if m4 is to sloppy it sounds like it is worn or badly cut..

I have a 4BA shaft that won't take 4mm props, thinking about changing it to metric

I have a couple of radstock shafts that are 4ba and m4 go on nice not sloppy at all  but the 4ba props wont go on m4 without damaging the thread.. I am only using prop shop props so they may be a better tolerance.

Well, this is most strange...my shaft is threaded for 4BA props, the propellor that came with the kit fits perfectly(and I'm assured that it is 4BA by the kit manufacturers) as do a couple of other old 4BA props I have. I've even gone down to the shop down the road and bought a handful of 4BA nuts...all fit perfectly, so I'm pretty sure the shaft size is correct at 4BA.

I have four other brass props threaded M4, all from SMC, and all marked M4 on the original packet...the fit on the 4BA shaft is likened to throwing a banana up Fleet Street, ie; it fits where it touches and it don't touch much!

I've emailed GSitek, and I'll send him the shaft to ensure that the prop he makes fits it properly. I'll keep you all informed....

I think you will find that George only does metric sizes. I tried to get a 4BA from him, and that's how I found out that you can use M4 on 4ba O0 If he is doing BA sizes now, please post on  here - I always use George as I'm one of those people that Prop Shop never reply to {-)

The shaft was an early Deans Marine one - I think they've gone metric now.

wht not get two bushes for a quid and a m4 shaft and then you will be up to date and have no problem getting props and swaping them to other boats.

O0 O0 O0 yes Peter......when we in OZ order taps & dies...we specify that they are for use ...south of the border  {-) %%....& they turn up ...upside down but OK for use down here   :-)) O0

Micrometers & vernier calipers have not been invented yet in OZ...... {-) but we still seem to be able to gauge the difference between 3.6 mm diameter & 4.0 mm diameter just by sight or feel! - Derek
