?? Suspicious e-mail.
« on: October 22, 2009, 04:37:14 pm »

Hi All,

I have just received  am e-mail which I was asked to answer. The contents basically wanted me to subscribe so that they could have photo's of ships that I had taken.

They also gave a web page, www.MyShip.com

Checking this site it did not come up although something similar did.

I am very suspicious about this and think it looks like a spam to me.

I think they could have got my e-mail via Mayhem as I have only sent ship pictures to them.

Has anyone else had e-mails from them?

Pete,

This looks like a new site or a scam to get your pictures so that they can use them for their own purposes. I would ignore it or tell them to get lost though, if your feeling brave, ask then just what their purpose is, how they intend to use your pictures and just how are they going to pay for you for using them on their site.

Pete

googling on myship.com gives a fair bit of info, including this exchange: http://www.shipspotting.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=7166&forum=1&post_id=39429

So several other groups have been contacted.  From a quick overview it does not look like a malicious scam, but rather someone starting a commercial site touting for input and business. It might become successful, and you might want to contribute photos to it then, but at the moment it has nothing to offer, and it's a bit cheeky to ask for donations first! Also, it looks as if it's really intended for full-size ships....
