Aeromodeller Model Maker Plans Handbook
« on: November 25, 2006, 06:59:46 pm »

Been going through storage boxes of books and found this.  It must be 1963 or 1964 vintage.  Lots of plane models (control line, combat, gliders, Jetex powered, sea planes) but also lots of boats too, including some really ingenious looking walkers, air-boats, cars etc.  I remember poring over this when I was a nipper.  Fascinating stuff.  I wonder if any of the plans are still available?

I think most of them are, if not from Model Boats then through the X Plans site. There were certainly some ingenious ideas in those days.

Aw, NOW you're cooking!
I'd trade me third leg in exchange for casting me peep'ers over Mike Flag-D's book.
Tiger.T, have you never heard of X Plans?? Me neither - until about 5-yr ago. Dude, if you'll pardon the self-indulgance, I built my best boat from one of their plans. The URL eludes me at this juncture (hic!), but Google will find it.

I'm intrigued. After all this time of looking at your avtar pic, I'm still not sure. A ship of some kind, but what?...
One of Brunel's?

X List is a service for obtaining some of the discontinued plans from the 50s, 60s and 70s, mostly MAP. Have a look

Not all the plans are there and you really need a handbook from the period as it is only a list with no pictures.

As Richard says, it's the old Queen Mary. I photographed her in Long Beach a couple of days before 9/11. There is a framed copy hanging in my loo!

PMK - Not sure if I'd be doing somethng awfully illegal, but I'd be happy to scan the boat bits of the handbook, if you're interested.

To Bish' and DickyD:

I'm running 1024 x 768 resolution on a 19" monitor. Seems to be the best setting for my mince pies, but it means some avtars tend to look a tad small. But now that you've wised me up... Yeah, I see it now.
Thanks!

Flag-D:

That's real kind of you to offer the scans.
Like you, I remember the buzz I had from grocking them oldie-timey models. Still do.
And you say your book has some plane designs, too?  Although I'm past the trainer stage I still have a thing for a wing with dihedral. For me, at least, it's the look that gives it such appeal.
Regarding model boats, I also got a thing for old-time cabin cruisers of the 40's - 60's era. Would there be anything along them lines in your book?
Assuming the answer is yes - and assuming you can live with the guilt of your law-breaking misdemeanours <wink!>, then could I take you up on your offer, please?

But how do we set the ball rolling? Can the scans be compressed to a managable upload/download size?
Pse let me know what I owe in return.

By the by...
Would you happen to know where I might get some info. or pictures of the Cherokee 4 plane? As far as I know it's an American design, but of that I'm not certain. It's a low-wing job with tricycle landing gear.

PMK: I'll have a go at scanning in a few pages tomorrow and see what sort of size they turn out to be and let you know.  As for legality?  Well, you can't buy the hand book anymore and all I'm trying to do is let someone else see the pictures and reference no's so they can buy the relevant plans...aren't I?
