Cygnus GM33. Deck Paint & Finishing.
« on: November 02, 2009, 04:51:15 pm »

I have painted the deck of my 1:16 Cygnus with Humbrol matt deck green (No.88) but this seems to mark too easily.  Should I finish off with a coat of Humbrol matt varnish (No.49) to protect the surface.  I should imagine that when I get round to painting the deck on my 1:12 scale model it is going to take a fair amount of paint/varnish and, in view of this and the cost of the small tins of Humbrol, is it possible to use a paint and matt varnish as sold by the DIY stores?   Any suggestions (clean) much appreciated.  :-)

Hi, I too have had the same problem and as a result i now need to respray a section of my deck due to finger prints  >>:-( The only thing that protects it is Ronseal Satin Varnish, though it's important that you double check (in good light) that the surface is free from finger prints! Then once all looks fine paint on the Ronseal either with a brush or for better results use an airbrush. The Ronseal is hard wearing, scratchproof and most importantly water resistant.

Hope this helps!

Derek Hi there

Have you thought about using the Humbrol 150 ml spray cans?   Works out a lot cheaper than the tins.   I have just been on the Humbrol website and I notice that they do do 3 versions of the paints and varnishes.

So, ensure you get the right one - meaning - 135 satin varnish you can purchase in acrylic, enamel and another type of acrylic with solvent added.    So if you have used acrylic for your deck make sure you use acrylic varnish for the overcoating.

Many thanks to everyone for your suggestions.  I think that I will have to try your suggestion Ray for the deck.  I have no problem with the outside of the hull as I have used Halfords spray paints and finished with acrylic satin lacquer.  I have actually float tested the 1:16 boat - have a look at the 1:12 Cycnus listing.
Once again, guys, many thanks to you all.   :-) :-))

Went to B&Q this morning but could not get the Ronseal varnish mentioned so I got their Diamond Hard Varnish in matt and satin.  I think that these should work okay - hope so anyway.   O0

Now having a slight touch of the seconds as, although it says 'wash brushes in water', it does not say anything about what to use to thin the varnish :((.  I have emailed Ronseal to see what they say  {:-{.
Anyone else have any ideas?

Derek
An easy way to determine if the varnish will thin with a substance is this.
Get an egg cup or similar size vessel,or a jar will do.
Place a small amount of varnish in vessel, add water or white spirit or thinners, and stir together.
If the two are not compatible, they will separate immediately, like oil on water,

Many thanks for your suggestions, Mark.  I don't want to open the tins until I know something definite so I will see what Ronseal say about it.  Things used to be much easier in the days when you just mixed in the appropriate amount of white spirit  :((.

Many thanks, Ray.  It sounds as though it might be okay for the deck so will give it a trial run tomorrow on a piece of styrene painted with the deck paint.  :-)) :-)
