Has anyone ever modelled a floating crane?
« on: July 30, 2008, 09:40:50 pm »

Hello all.

I was just wondering if anyone has ever modelled a fully working R/C floating crane - or one of those boats that is essentially 80% crane and 20% boat?

Did they work out OK? Were they an easy build etc?

I used to love building cranes when I was a kid out of meccano.... I think *all* boys find cranes interesting.

The Lidl crane might make a useful starting point for something like this..

I built an AmClyde floating crane in 1:48 scale in 1992 and it still works fine.

Its can't compare in size with the Wirral model boat club's crane.. that's gorgeous...
but this one in Seattle, Washington is an operational crane also.

A few years ago we had a model of the Mersey Mamouth displayed at the Alfold Charity Model Boat Show, one of the Merchant Seamen at the home had worked on the Mamouth but due to ill health was unable to visit the show on the field, so it was arranged for the Mamouth to visit the Seaman in the home, he was delighted to see the model.

Very nice also,
I was so agog at the size of the Wirral crane, I failed to notice all the bearing wheels on your crane tub.
Excellent work.

hello. I have a question . The smit crane (yellow jib). When she lift all the weight is transmitted down on to the bow of the barge. So if she lived a model boat weighing 20kg will she have her bow low in the water and her stern high up in the air or is there some transfer tank.

Huge transfer tanks. I read somewhere that the power required for the transfer pumps it 10 times
the amount for the hoist motors!
