Would any of you on the forum who have built or refurbished a MH&B Topaz launch be able to tell me what colour and make of paint you used on the hull. The colour that I am looking for is that shown in the brochure, dark blue with a touch of red in it, perhaps victoria plum colour.

Any help much appreciated,

my wife is building one of these, she bought the hull from MHB- she did not buy the kit as she wanted to make some thing a little more unique plus being a cabinet maker she wanted the challenge of scratchbuilding the upper works !
 she has painted it a burgundy colour to be different, it looks great and it compliments the timbers she has used, (red cedar and  some other timbers)...- its  just halfords paint but it looks great- it needs a dust having stood in the workshop now for over a year having had no more work done to the boat ....

Why go for the same colour as the manufactured spec?

I  purchased a bargain Seekadette a couple of years ago off e-bay for £350, the hull was painted in the manufacturers recommended colour scheme which is fine but I wanted something different.
 She's now pale, pea green upper and dark green below the water line, the water line is a gold stripe. The engine -- which may be a bit underpowered as its  only a Cheddar Vee Twin-- but whose complaining at £350 quid!! and all ancilliary items, carpets and upholstery are burgandy. She looks very smart . She will also be renamed something other than Seekadette

I've  almost completed the rebuild ( the original owner made a bit of a pigs ear of it ). Stripped everything back apart from the deck which is still "iffy" but it will be a working boat so I'm not concerned about her being a showcase jobby.

At some stage in the very near future I'll post a couple of pics.

by the way you will probably find it is a standard can of car paint knowing Brian.

I used Citroen Admiral blue- Halford's paint on my Krick Victoria, very similar to MHB photos and a lovely blue. But why not go for something that really grabs you- have a look at classic launches and you'll see that blue wasn't actually used very often as the cobalt needed to colour the paints of the time was worth about 5 times as much as gold!!!

The colours predominantly were hues of white- never brilliant white, black varying to dark greys and green- usually a close variant to BRG.

My personal preference is black above the waterline with light green waterline, gold pinstripe following the sheer about 4-5mm below it.

I have spoken to Brian and he can't remember what blue it was but thinks it might be a Vauxhall colour.

Guy, I must say that Burgundy is also one of my favourite colours so that is a possibility if I decide against blue

Greg, I will have a look at the Citroen blue, Oxford blue is also a possibility, the Lifeboat colour.

Terry, "Why go for the same colour as the manufactured spec?"  You have raised a fair point there. If I'm honest the colours on the brochure were what sold it to me if you can understand my thinking, the hardwood and the red tinged blue just shouted out "you need to buy me", so I did!
I have really enjoyed the build to date and have now ordered Der Seekadette to follow on.

Again thank you one and all for taking the time to reply, Topaz will I think still be blue but I feel that Seekadettte will be burgundy or Sage green.

The colour my Topaz is green the paint used was two pack car paint it can been seen on the southmodel air show 2009 on Mayhem shows half way down.

Thanks for the lead to your Topaz Dave, a very neat build. The green does suit the sleak looks of the river launch type hull and I will be looking for a suitable shade for Der Seekadette. I also fancy a gold coach line above the rubbing strake. Many thanks for your reply

Thanks Richard for posting that photo. It was that one or one very much like it that was absolutely no help what so ever in resisting the temptation to order Der Seekadette, they look super together.
