Our club, the Ballina RSL Club Marine Modellers, was invited by the local council to participate in Rivafest, an annual festival celebrating Ballina's position at the mouth of the Richmond River. The photos showing our display were taken early in what turned out to be a very hot day, about 35 Celsius, and before the crowds arrived. Despite our proximity to the river, as can be seen from one of the photos, and the fact a good breeze was blowing, our position was in the lee of a large building, which meant we gained very little benefit from the breeze.

Nevertheless, the display proved extremely popular with the public, and even rated a TV evening news segment.

The models in photo 4 are my own and are my scratch built Grand Banks Cruiser, a Billing Nordkap, a Model Slipway Sentinel and a scratch built Pusher Tug, which is used as a recovery boat at our lake.

I'm truly envious, Peter. What a location, you lucky man. Any more pics of the boats ?

One thing crossed my mind.. Does that sort of weather affect the plastic boats ?

Thanks for the comments everyone. We are blessed with a beautiful location and, while the water in the background of one of the photos is the main river, our sailing lake is only half a mile from where the festival was held. We don't sail in the river, there are too many pleasure boats and the tide runs quite strongly.

Ken, those pics were the only ones I took on the day, but I do have shots of most of the models on our lake on various sailing days. Regarding the effect of heat on plastic - it has not caused any noticeable damage so far. My Sentinel is over 4 years old, and is kept in a metal clad shed in which the temperature regularly reaches 40 Celsius during summer, and there is no evidence of damage at all. The main risk to plastic or GRP is ultra violet light from direct sunlight, and I suppose a few hours exposure a month is insufficient to cause significant damage, at least in the short term.

That's nice to know. I wouldn't like to see the boats withering !!

I built a Springer with a similar top deck to yours. ( great minds eh!) only mine is painted Red and I use it for rescue work, which is quite often.

Hi Ken,

Hercules is not a Springer, it is an enlarged version of a plan called Jenny Sue 2, which I think was in a MMI magazine a few years ago. It is also used as a rescue boat, also often

Its best effort so far was pushing a 2.4 metre long model of the battleship Missouri back to shore, after Mighty Mo became disabled in the middle of the lake.

Yes, they are great for rescues.

Here's a picture of mine. It looks similar from a distance. It's the standard springer size and was very cheap to build.

Mine is somewhat bigger, about 80cm long. You can probably get an idea from the photo, as it's next to Sentinel.

You've got some 'Tidy' members there, Peter. The boats all look the Biz. Very clean cut and nice, along with the water.

We don't get to see the bottom of the lake over here. We have to guess what's underneath.

Aziz at the my local pond in Cwmbran, South Wales.

Later in the year all the fish were seen dying and had to be quickly rescued while the lake was drained and cleaned. Also, the lake at Barry Island is now drained for some reason.

Your water looks gorgeous, Arrow. Is that what they mix with the Whisky ?

Why would I want to beat that, Martin?

It's much cooler today, only about 23 C, but more hot weather to come, we're told

The little paddler, which looked great on the water, was built by one of our members who sadly died last year, aged 87. The boat is now on permanent display in our club's cabinet at the Ballina Naval and Maritime Museum.
