wheelhouse glazing help
« on: November 30, 2009, 06:56:34 pm »

Has anyone got any info on ways to glaze a 1:48 scale wheelhouse so that it doesn't look naff when looking in. I have the clear sheet supplied with the kit, but not really sure the best way to fit it.

Well, I couldn't believe this.  Only this very afternoon did I glaze my   "St Nectan"

The method I use on all my ships is to cut the perspex the exact width of the internal wall to be glazed, so that it fits in without buckling. The height of the perspex is usually double that of the open windows.

Break open a new tube of Cockpit glue. ( the smelly stuff from the days of old!)

Squeeze a drop onto your finger and smear the inside wall all around the windows and below.  Then have a cup of tea. Return and press the perspex into the rear of the windows, ENSURING you do not SLIDE it in any way. Press it up against the window section starting at the roof end. When attached, use spring clamps ALL over and do not slide the perspex.  (did I say this before !!)

Leave for 24 hours, no matter what it says on the tube.

If it falls off next day then have a quicker cup of tea in between.  The reason for this is that you do not want it runny as it WILL squeeze all over the perspex.

Do NOT use super glue as it will FOG up your windows.

Hope this helps.

Ken

I have been experimenting with clear epoxy, but made such a "Pigs ear" of it, that I drilled it all out and reverted to the above tried and tested method.   ok2

UHU works Ken.

I use a lump of bluetac on the end of an ice lolly stick to hold the perspex as I put it in place.

By the way Hobbycraft now sell packets of lolly sticks. They have many uses.

I put a three sided frame round the inside of the glass openings to stop the glass sliding

Hi Richard.

I like that idea. Brill, as they say.

Why do your boats look better on the inside than mine on the outside. Smashing bit of detail there.   ;)

The massive amounts of clear plastic blister packs that almost every thing you my these days is also good for windows and the such.
I usually have the big flat bit from the back saved in a little stock pile!

OK, go to the guinea shop.

I also would like my exteriors to look as good as those interiors.
