Billing Boats: First Build Question
« on: December 06, 2009, 11:09:27 pm »

Hi all,
I have recently purchased a Billing Boats Kit and was going through the instructions and inspecting all the parts and came across a slight perceived problem which I'm hoping someone could give me a hand on! I have attached pictures of the instructions to help my explaining.
The instructions show that you must hammer 5 nails into the structural keel and a backing board. You then go to glue on the frames, the deck and the planking. All straightforward (i hope  :}).
However I'm not sure how, after this is all done, you are supposed to remove these 5 nails from the backing board?
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
THANKS,
Robbie

Hi Robbie,

I have used this method for building aircraft wings and it works great. It allows you to almost complete the whole structure without warping or twisting it  :-))

Simply cut the heads of the nails off with side cutters with about 1 or 2 mm protruding, and when your finnished building simply prise it off the backing board  :-))

Just be carefull though you dont run your fingers over the backing board to find the nails, 'cause it will hurt'

                                                          cheers

awesome, thanks john!

i was also thinking when gluing on the frames to the keel would it possible that the glue would stick onto the mdf backboard and thus it would be very hard to 'prise off' the keel from the backing board?

thanks in advance  :-))

If you are worried about glue sticking the keel to the backing board, simply place a piece of grease proof paper or the side from a plastic bag between the keel and backing board.
