Vosper MTB
« on: March 17, 2010, 01:32:02 pm »

Here's a couple of photos of the latest model.  Based on the Vosper MTB's of WW2 and built to a scale of 1:32 making it about 67 cm (26 inches) long with an operating weight of just under 1.5 kg (3 lb).
A little different from my previous fast scale models which were based on US Navy craft.  It also differs in using direct rather than geared drive.  A high power "545" motor type and a six cell battery pack make it quite nippy.  Perhaps not as fast as the equivalent geared models but much quieter!
Plans just posted to "Model Boats" so now I can clear the workbench for the next project.

It's such a pity that todays kids don't have the same inspiration to create things like Vic Smeed did with my generation. Your designs would (and hopefully do) stir some of todays to have a go Glynn. While the deck detail ain't to "Museum" standard, there's certainly enough to give it the WOW factor to SOME kids.

All power to yer drawing arm.

Maninthestreet,
Magazine publication dates are always in the hands of the gods.  If accepted for publication I'd guess we are looking at 12 months time.

It is a pity we couldnt judge your models to see if they are up to museum standards.  I dont think we have seen a photograph of one of your models, please let us see one.

You do seem to forget it is the pleasure in building the model and not what it looks like.

I think it is a super model, museum standard models belong where they belong in a glass case in a museum. As Shipmate 60 said to me once and I believe he is correct 3 feet of on the pond and no-one can see the detail. Besides which not everyone has the skill to make highly detailed models to high standards and I am one of those, but I do enjoy making something that floats and moves as I want on the water. I do think that this hobby does need some good quality easy to make model plans etc to encourage new young blood into it from things like video games and remote model cars etc.

I think it looks fantastic! There is more then enough to look at detail wise and it looks great on the water, what more do you need?

Not sure I would agree with that, I have seen many working museum standard models over the years and more power to the elbow of those who build them so the rest of us can admire them. But of course the majority of models do not aspire to those standards and nor should they. Glynn has a knack of producing good looking easy to build models that attract people away from buying RTR boats or models bought on EBay and is firmly of the view that you don't need to be a master craftsman to construct an attractive model which is all your own work. The continuing popularity of his projects suggests that he is right on the money. Vic Smeed has the same talent and his designs have also stood the test of time.

Model boating covers all types of model and all skill levels and most people will find the level and degree of commitment which suits them personally. And that's all it needs to be really. There is always extra pleasure in being able to say 'I built it myself' whatever the 'technical standard' of the model may be.

Strange how my complement to Mr. Guest can be misinterpreted

It's how you read it, isn't it? For example, Admiral Bish's last posting could be interpreted as saying that Glynn Guest is not a master craftsman. I personally didn't think you meant any offence by what you wrote - more like GG has the happy knack of making a simple model look good. "More power to yer drawing arm" doesn't sound like a dig at Glynn to me.

Maybe old Bluebird hadn't taken his anti-Grinch tablets that morning?  %)

Oh, so it seems like three at least have b*****d lenses. Looking at Glynns designs over the years, I wonder how many have been prompted to have a go because of the simplicity of the design and details??? Far more I would suggest than the shelf queens. Sadly, as todays depth of interest for many, is a purely transient thing and has developed into "Where can I buy one". Different people have different skill levels AND ALWAYS WILL HAVE,  so I wonder how many fast attack craft will appear on the local ponds?? Far more I would imagine than the Bismarks and King George the fifths.

THANKS AGAIN GLYNN, (big letters for the hard of hearing) and trust it will be a long time before the sh******e who lives at the top of the building on fleebay gets it into his stocklist.

Thank you Martin,
