Martin, the only person who can do this, added the R&D addendum to the Steam category in the "Research and Design" board to differentiate the topic from the Steam section of the "Dry Dock" Board.  If you notice he did the same to the other topics in the "Research and Design" board as well.

It does help if you ever want to move a thread because we only get a list of topics to move it to and the headings could be confusing if you have two of a number of them so it has been changed for a reason.

A BB says, managing the data is a daily task, a lot of it automagically  but still leaves a lot to be done manually.
The boards and, title, posts all need to be 'sheep herded' from time to time to optimise the database,
eg.  a simple word search can increase the the CPU load by 65%, so anything I can do to 'round up the
 information' helps... including moving and renaming stuff. I really just do it to annoy everyone!    :P

I think what Peter meant to say was "Thank you Martin for keeping this board running in the quiet and efficient manner that you do."  :}

I have some idea of the work involved in keeping a forum on track - and it's not a simple task. Plus Martin's doing it - and thereby allowing us all access to this wealth of information, humour and occasional nonsense - for free.

He should be sainted, imo.  :-))

: dreadnought72      No that is not what I meant.  a few years ago there was one steam section , then the big change about and we had two,both have had a few name changes and so it's hard to find a older post if someone asks a question .some one asked about pictures of nice steam plants and could we have a section for them , well there was a post it was the first one in steam to  posted to get it going. and it was "post pictures of any nice steam plants you have seen".  OK not the best title but after a few months it was suddenly changed. OK but it look then like I was taking credit  for someone Else's boats . then there was the change  about and we got two sections that I never know which one to post in (one would be enough) as I think I am not alone on that front as the contents of both are very similar.

Change is never going to be universally accepted however it is sometimes necessary to make life better for the majority and to keep that ideal going change can sometimes be necessary.  When the headings and categories were changed around a couple of years ago we did recieve more positive feedback from members than negative so we think it was the right thing to do.  What you have to be very careful of is making changes based on the requirements of a noisy minority rather than the silent majority to ensure that you continue to support most of the membership.

As for the categories, there is always going to be an overlap between the two steam boards but broadly dividing the building area from the research area made sense so that members who were looking for information and asking questions didn't have to trawl through all the whole lot and those who wanted to show off thier models had a more dedicated section to do so.  Finding what you are looking for now should be that bit easier.

A perfect example was only today when it was asked about a dedicated area to post pictures of exceptional steam plant etc.  Basically we've already got it without it being cluttered up with all the research questions and answers.

We can only ever hope to please the majority and therefore strive to do so
