Help with building
« on: January 01, 2010, 12:19:29 pm »

Hello my name is Alex and I work on an Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS)  vessel called the Highland Courage, I would like to build a model of the vessel but every time I talk to any model organisations for assistance or ideas, I get a very negative response.  I would like to make a working one but I would be quite happy to make a static model if the expense is too much.

I have access to all the ships plans and will be able to use them, so is there anybody out there that could give me an idea of where I can start???. I have made model Airfix kits before, for example I have just finished building a model of the Bismark which I am quite pleased with. :-))

Alex,
Look through some of the "Masterclasses" on here and you will get the basic idea of "plank-on-frame" building.
With the ships drawings there is more than enough information to make a hull and complete the model.
If you choose a common scale IE 1/32 or 1/48 there are many commercial fittings available which can cut down the building time considerably.

Hi Alex,

I've made a few models (working) from drawings only - but then I've been making models of all sorts for the past 60+ years!  My current magnum opus is a 1:32 scale model of one of the SAR&H harbour tugs which comes out at almost 1.5 metres LOA and a displacement of around 80kg.  I have builders drawings plus dozens of pics as this vessel was greatly modified during her lifetime and so only the hull lines and deckhouse plans were of real use.  Everything hand made except chain and LED lights!! ;-)      Your best bet is bread an butter using obeche or jelutong  and since you have all the builder's drawings a true scale model should be well within your reach.  Shout me if I can be of further assistance.

Hi Alex,

Welcome aboard.  As shipmate60 says you should have enough information to build a plank on frame hull. I'm working mainly from photos and a few drawings on Anglian Sovereign, which appears to have similar lines to the ship in Dickys photo. Here are a few photos of the hull build.

I can see where you are coming from with the shape, but as a master with BOURBON, FARSTAD, MAERSK and also the ANGLIAN SOVEREIGN, the hull is completely different.

The UT722L class is a different type of Anchor-handler.

Boater,

I bow to your professional knowlwedge of these ships. Nonetheless, the photos will give Alex an idea of how to go about building the hull, which was my main aim.
