16 days of woodworking and we are up to this stage.

The first Blood has been spilt. (see if you can spot it ?!) but it is getting to a recognisable stage now, and I'm cheering up.

The following pictures are of the first stage and it is planned to sand the hull smooth and cover it again with fine strips then sand it down again.

It must be said at this stage that the RNLI drawings are ONLY a guide. I'm relying heavily on your pictures for finer detail with this hull. I've never seen so many angles on one boat.  {:-{

Half my time has been spent throwing bits of wood away. So far I've used one 8 X 4 sheet of plywood  and 8 planks of 4" x 3/4" x 4 foot timber. All cut into millimetres on my beautiful bandsaw. Everything in the workshop has been covered in saw dust, so today we vacuumed through and now we're ready for the week ahead.

I well recall the sanding too! Looks great.
If you email me your address I will send you a CD with hundred's of ref photos of the Newhaven Severn and a set of plans I drew (1/16th though).  Every little helps as they say.

Hi Derek

Got it in one.  It's also on the wood side which was cleverly turned away from the camera.
My fault for cutting the protruding lump of wood with a Stanley knife. Must get a small 'Davids plane'. Funny how you're right about the Wife. Not much sympathy there. :embarrassed:

Well there's another week gone by in the wood yard.

I've started constructing the deck level and compartments sections. The nose cone section had started peeling away from the bow keel, so had to be cut off. I could see no secure way of attaching the planking so I replaced this front section with plywood and today covered it back with planking.  A bit of sanding due here, to get back the curve of the bow.  See first picture to get an idea of the amount of wood I'm shifting.

The new motors have arrived from Marks Model bits  (900's for surfing!)  along with two 5mm prop shafts and 75mm Brass propellers from Cornwall boats. Now I have the sizes for fitting to the boat so will be able to position them accurately.

Will have to think about the rudders soon as I want the internal structures fixed before sealing down the deck.

Here are the latest pictures.

mmmmm what are you hiding behind all of those the sheets of second class or reject ply Ken?

More bloody power points  {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) %% %% %% %% %% %% %% %%

Like how many power points does a work station [wood yard] need?

Please keep the photographs coming along as we do enjoy the build :-)) ......regards Derek

Hi Derek

Very observant. I like that in a modeller. Yes, the secondhand wood was snatched from the skip in the wood yard, for free. Couldn't resist it. Might find a use for it eh!!!

At the moment it hides the sockets cause they remind me of my previous trade.   :} :}

At last, I'm beginning to enjoy the build. I shouldn't have any trouble with her buoyancy. Thinking of making two........ one for each foot, and I can go water skiing    %)

I have cut off the 5 ply keel as it was warping a bit and have cut a new one from solid wood.

This will be screwed and glued to the hul, but before I do, I was wanting to shape it. At the moment it has square edges and I thought I might curve them a bit. (easier to do away from the boat)

What is the profile needed here, please. Can I curve the edges ?  If so, then by how much ?

All advice gratefully received.   :-)

Hi Ken

Just done a quick check on my 1/12th Severn and the keel isn't tapered at all, just the edges rounded off. The hull is a GRP moulding so all I did was to give it a light sanding to smooth it off.

When you think about it, if you taper a wooden keel the danger is that ,if the boat, being heavy is grounded the keel may split. so the thicker the wood the better. Hope this makes sense!

Your Severn is looking good keep up the good work.

Beautiful.  Just the view I was hoping for. Thank you for that.

Today I fitted the new keel with wood glue and heavy bolts. I have rounded the long edge but kept the width. It is now 3/4 inch timber which replaces the plywood so should be an Ice breaker.  :}

I've been looking around for 20mm wide  'D'  shape rubber to girth the boat. I need around 5 metres of the stuff. Any ideas of a supplier please gents.

Hi Ken

As far as I know the only place you can get "D" shaped rubber fendering for your Severn is from Speedline Models and it costs £40 for enough to go around your boat.

My 1/12th Severn is a Speedline and the fendering is only 15mm wide.

Model Slipway do a "D" shaped plastic one but it's only 10mm wide.

Hope this helps

Brian

Thanks for the info, Brian.

The drawings come out at 20mm ?  What do I do now ?

Tomorrow I'll cut an imitation fender to size it up and see what it looks like at both sizes.

£40 eh !!!

When you have decided what size is the correct one then try these people. They should be able to solve the fender problem for you.  8)

Hi Brian

I've just measured it with calipers and it comes out at 18.6mm, so we're both right. :D

All I've got to do now is Pay for it.  (have to take Her shopping first !)

Hi Mat

You and me, both.   Their frames (3) are so bleak as to be unattainable to achieve.

In the end, I made 10 frames by measuring the scaled drawings and still got it wrong.

I've been on this now since January 5th and have created a garden skip full of sawdust (might come in handy to stiffen up some glue !!)

Luckily my trusty band saw has seen me through the winter. I've never cut so much wood in all my life.  I'm still sticking on bits to fatten her up and next day sanding them back to a nice profile. I think I'm there now, so today I went out and bought the Volkswagen Orange to cheer myself up.

I shall be covering her with epoxy, so the actual wood layout will be hidden. (it won't pass any muster, I can tell you)  It's also getting quite heavy and there's more wood to go on yet.  The floor is laid inside and the deck has been cut ready. Mind you, the costs to make, so far are £9 for glue, so I can't complain. (all the wood was free)

 I've started collecting the expensive stuff to fit inside so will keep you posted on these costs as they fit in.

I am really enjoying myself with this one. Go on, have a go. It's a challenge and a half.  :-))

Ken

Hi Kenny, great stuff........... Did you cut/create the planks for the hull or were they bought?......... I'm toying with the idea of getting a bandsaw and wondered if the machine is capable of straight cuts on suitable sheet material. I used one years ago for cutting out frames for two hulls and it managed very accurate cuts easily, with practice ................. but, is it good for cutting planks?  :-)

I'm a really big fan of the 1:12 lifeboats.  :}

On my current build the City of Sheffield Tyne i had a rubber extrusion made to match the right profile for the fendering.

Hi Perkasaman

Yes indeed it's a great machine. Ensure you get the widest blade you can afford to prevent 'flexing'.

I have managed to cut 6 foot length of  6" by 1"  timber to a width of 1mm planks, which proved to be too thin anyway. I settled on 2 to 3 mm in the end. I have two blades of different teeth per inch and found the 10 tooth one best for accurate work. I use the 6 tooth per inch for ripping larger wood, and so far have managed to slice a piece of 3X3 inch carefully to a width of 2mm. (just experimenting)

It does need special guides clamped in place as long material like this will 'wander' if you sneeze.  :D    I had rests fixed each side of the blade to support the wood and keep it true.

One thing to note is keep away from Knots in the wood. Planks cut from these tend to snap when handled afterwards.  :embarrassed:

As to plywood, it's like cutting cheese. You can actually cut a 2 inch circle, it's so sharp and dusty, so goggles are a must.

Hi Russ

They look smashing. Are they hollow or solid  D  shapes ?
