This took longer than expected as, that Plasticote stuff didn't want to come off.  Orrible paint. I shall never buy another tin as long live.

Hours later I had the little men back to Milliput stage and spent the afternoon in the deck chair sanding them nice and smooth. I decided to go the 'spray can route'  and sprayed them with my favourite paint, the trusty red oxide.  (unfortunately it's darker than yellow !!!)

The yellow was sprayed on and does not show up very well even after the whole tin was used up.

I decided to make the men's life belts out of hollow electrical cable as these were difficult to paint satisfactorily, so the milliput version was cut off.

It was at this point I have retired to have beer. So far, the men have cost me £20, so another tin of paint should see it completed.    %)  %)  %)  %)   I'll let you know what happens next.

Ken

I've just noticed they do look a bit desperate and trying to get away.   :embarrassed:

That is nice, Dicky. They look the bee's knee's.  I'm hopeless with a brush, as you can see.

Hi Dan.

Yes it's the Airfix version I'm afraid. Nothing too grand this time. Should be fun.     :D

Hi Ken

I've just comleted an Airfix Severn for one of my Granddaughter's and I'd just like to mention a few words of caution.

Because a lot of the parts were tiny in the extreme they had to be painted before assembly, and I used Humbrol paints as recommended.

But beware of your choice of adhesive! You'll need one that bonds plastic to plastic and you'll find that these types of adhesive are not compatible with Humbrol paints.........the dreaded orange peel effect! It's OK when joining the bigger bits together before painting, but the problem arises when you come to stick the ready painted bits on. If you have too much glue on the tiny bits it runs and causes the dreaded effect.

Don't know what to recommend as I wasn't happy with my finished result so I suggest you experiment with some scrap material before you start.

There were also a few decals missing from the kit which I wasn't  too happy about.

Regards

Brian

I'd say use superglue but it mists as you well know. For modelling, i always use loctite ultra gel, sets really quick, doesnt run and is generally pretty tough. Small amounts though might be ok for the small parts. I know what you mean regarding the fiddlyness of the kit, i built one when they first came out. Needless to say it went straight in the bin.

Hi Dan

Oh yes, I think super glue is out, on this type. I'll let you know how I get on.

Cheers

Yellow spray paint on hand, I set too on the little men.  I must say it came out rather well today and they dried lovely in the heat of the days we're getting lately. I managed three coats and it was dry by tea time.

After tea came the trimmings and fine stuff. A little touch up here and there and this is the final result below. I show my hand in the picture to give you an idea of the scale.

I think she is finished.         %)          (unless you know different !!   :embarrassed: )   thank you for following.

On with the next boat ...........................................................   8)

Thanks Dan. It was like being in Play school.  My good lady advised me to wear a 'Piny' as I'm a messy worker.    %)

Don't look at the pictures too close.     :embarrassed:

Its a good attempt ken, great infact. better than i could do. Interesting use of the tubing for the lifejacket, looks pretty good to be fair.

theres a few of these types of things on the market, george turner, speedline etc but i find they are expensive for what they are.

Good job anyway,

Dan

Thank you Dan (2).    :}

They finally cost me £5.50 each, but a lot of labour time which I enjoyed.

Spent the day making a strong enough shelf for her.  She's got a wall of her own, you know.  %)

Hiya Dicky.  Yes the film is started and I add to it every time I finish a section.

I shall start sea trials in anger when I've made a stronger trolley   %)    I'm still on the look out for the wheels.  I've had to clear the garage to make a suitable position for storage as she's 3 foot high by 6 foot long, so there's a wall space gone.   8).

Started on the Illustrious today as a relaxation project but it's not as easy as it looks.  Blog to follow when I get the time.

Great stuff, Ken, that will be extremely helpful when I start mine  :-)) I'm not sure when that will be, though, as it looks like we will be moving house some time in the not too distant future, and I will have some renovations to do before we move in. Modelling will have to take a back seat until we are settled in the new house  :((

                                  Rebuild Time

The weight of the boat has been worrying me for some time (68 pounds !!!).   She is difficult to launch so I have decided to SLIM her down a bit.

I have removed all the innards and sanded all the excess wood that I can see. The weight of the hull section is now down to 30 pounds empty.  I'll see how she performs before thinking about the upper decks.

I went inside and walked around taking pictures.   {-)  and she is massive. rather like an empty hanger waiting for a Pop concert. I have to redesign everything as I go along, but the motors are now fitted on slim down frames.  (good start).

I had to cut the back end of the deck to be able to access the rear section, so I'm hoping I can repair it to match.

Under this section was a load of spare wood previously used to house various parts which were never fitted. This was now surplus and adding to the weight, so out it came. My poor old Dremmel was Red hot to the touch !!!
