Automatic Direction Control

Hi there,

I am not involved with model boats but have been involved very lightly in model aircraft in the past. Curently I am actually looking at building a fishing kontiki powered by an mercury electric trolling motor, that will pull a long line 1-2km out to sea from the beach. These are quite common but all share one problem that they can get pushed off direction while going through the surf and end up going at an angle instead of straight out.

I considered installing rc recievers on the kontiki, but believe range, cost and the fact you are already actually very busy attaching hooks to the backbone (mainline) would make it difficult.

The new proposal is to install an electric compass that controls the rudder that holds the kontiki on a set bearing.

I have friends that can design a system from the components up, but rather the re-invent the wheel was hoping there was some modlar type arrangement already available.

Has anyone tried this before, are there any systems out there?

You can certainly get an electronic compass as they are used in maze following mouse robots, you can also get gps systems for model aircraft. I am sure if you Google either of these you will come up with a supplier.
