You don't travel on it much then Martin.... %)

The best way to travel on a vintage London Underground train is on the Isle of Wight.

I believe that many vinatge London Underground carriages are in use in all kinds of places including the Scillies.

The Paris Metro is special because it runs on rubber tyres. Also, because it links up with a rapid transport system into the suburbs and has double decked carriages.

Martin,

This book is really interesting in charting the construction of the London Underground lines. My daughter bought it for me for Christmas.

The Bridgewater canal had an underground transport system
to bring the coal out of the mines and transport it to Manchester
Long before the underground and they used 'boats'!

Sydney CBD has an underground system, which also extends, above ground, out into the suburbs. An article in Wikipedia here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney_underground_railways
The above ground section covers a huge area, and information on the whole system can be found on the CityRail web site here http://www.cityrail.info/

I can't find a list of all the world's underground system either, Martin.

mmmm in Sydney....in NSW in OZ we have the famous harbour bridge  :D ...we also have the Transfield Kugumi built under water tunnel from the southern shore to the nothern shore.....but there is more O0 {-)

Prior to WWI.... an underwater tunnel was driven from the southern shore of Sydney harbour to Garden Island Naval Dockyard....& then beyond to the northern shore of Sydney harbour  O0 ...Fort Dennison [near in the middle of the harbour] also has a vertical riser for access

You will not find this in history books or on the WEB ...but is true.....Derek..... :police:

I think Martin's referring to underground railway systems, rather than simply tunnels. At least, that's the impression I'm getting.

Peter ...I understand this ......& whilst I did find the following.....via..."wikipiedia" O0 ..it does not mention railway tracks...which I understand were installed - the text also does not reference a fresh water supply which was piped from the southern shore to GID ......Derek :-))

Garden Island was originally an island in Sydney Harbour, but extension of the base and the construction of a dry dock in the channel between the island and the mainland have resulted in its connection to the mainland shore at Potts Point from the 1940s. The wharves of the naval base now stretch the length of the eastern side of Woolloomooloo Bay, from the suburb of Woolloomooloo to the end of the original island.[6]

[edit] Tunnel system
There is a tunnel system under Garden Island that was once used by the Royal Australian Navy.[7] Within this tunnel system was a power station, offices and air raid shelters. This tunnel complex also had a command centre. Other tunnels also exist which headed further in towards Kings Cross.

The tunnels were used to move guns from one side of the island to the other. There are also older tunnels that were used to transport ammunition. The tunnels are now used for electrical wiring and communications.

The island also has a pit that was built in the 1800s and was used as a storage facility in case the island was ever attacked. The entrance to this pit has now been sealed.
