1/144 scale
« on: February 10, 2007, 05:57:23 pm »

hi all,
i have previously been an architectural model maker (for a year) and made all the usual models as a kid, now i thoucht, time to colate all my skills and life experiances, and build an R/C model warship!!

scale? i looked through loads of old copies of model boats that my dad had and looked for "the normal scale". obviously there wasnt one but a bloke that stood out was Glynn Guest. i liked the apparent simplicity of his models and i actually had a half built ww2 destroyer of his design, that my dad had started building when i was younger, and i quite liked the size so thats what i went for.

i was looking at building a type42 destroyer having always liked it and coming from Glasgow, but the more i looked at the new type45, the more it appealed. also, after lots of searches, there didnt seem to be anyone else building it and as the real ones are not in service yet, i thought, i'll see if i can beat them into the water!!!

so here, for now, is a couple of pics of her so far. she is 100% scratch build from balsa and card, just over a metre long. one thing i cant seem to find is 1/144 figures for standing on the deck! any ideas? oh, and all the info on sizes etc. came from 2 computer generated images on the bae systems website!!!

let me know all your comments, questions and ideas and i'll keep you posted.

cheers Dunk.

Hi Dunk
She looks superb above the waterline, but is that the correct underwater shape? It looks like the RN has lost the plot a little there, since WW2 RN Frigates and Destroyers have had superb streamlined underwater sections based on the WW2 ships themselves.

Hi there Dunk
Great looking model.

Try Ontracks for 1:144 scale figures. They have several types that could be adapted i.e. airmen and tank crew.
Their web site is:

hi cdsc123 & dickyd, thanx for the apraisals, like i said, the only info we (me and my dad) could find to go on were 2 "cgi's"on the BAE systems website, a plan view and a side elevation. since building her i have discovered alot of inaccuracies from the real ones. they are both in scotstoun, glasgow so i have been down for a wee look. howerver, i appear to be one of the first, if not, the first, to build her so a few mistakes can surely be allowed!! hehe. oh, the guy in the pic is my dad, the cheif engineer and shipright, im taking more of a design/electronics engineer/ director of production stance!

keep you posted.

Hi Dunk, If your happy with it who cares, we all have had to start at the deep end, if you had seen my first model, ;D ;D , Now have a look at USS MOFFETT  in builds, and HMS Iron Duke in scale models. Best of luck with your project. ron h

I too agree with ron, you built her, as long as you are happy who cares.
We all build models for our recreation, and Glyn Guest does simplify the hull form to take into consideration the available size of balsa sheets.
Yes she is the first I have seen so you do have a "unique" model.
She looks good to me!!

Nice looking model dunkyg.
I too like Glynn Guest's models and 1:144 scale. As Glynn says. at this scale cruisers are not too big to handle and destroyers are not too small. Another source of figures is the N gauge model railway scene as the scale is close enough, useful for other items as well.

By the way, how do you get away with placing your model on such a fine table, I know if I did that SWMBO would be on me like a ton (or should that be tonne?) of bricks. ;D

well chaps, the table is in my parents house as my dad (pictured) seems to have taken over production (from day one). all i get to do now is fund the project and offer opinions now and then!
however, i too am allowed by my girlfriend to put models on my dining table, heres a few tricks you can try out on your own good lady! "the paint needs a nice warm environment to cure", the damp air in the garage will warp the hull" and my best.... "if I'm not allowed to display my finished model on the mantlepiece when its finished, surely a few days on the dining table wont kill you!! be warned however, if like mine your lady knows nothing about modeling, expect stupid answers like, "whats wrong with the paint that it needs to cure?", or, "how will it survive in a pond if dampness affects it?"

and a final note, i accept no responsability for and injury you sustain if you try any of these lines out!

Dang it. You beat me to it. I had the same idea but my project was still in the 'what a good idea' stage. Ho hum.

Looks very good (the table that is  ;D ). Let's see more pictures.
