Navigation lights
« on: February 10, 2010, 04:12:22 pm »

Hi Guys
Reading through the Collision Regulations to get the right lights for my drifter I came across the following:
Annex 1, part 5; Screens for sidelights.
'The sidelights of vessels of 20 metres or more in length shall be fitted with inboard screens painted matt black
and meeting the requirements of section 9'  (Section 9 is the sector requirements).
For ages I have painted the backboards in the colour of the light, and looking in various magazines so do most
other modellers. Have we been getting it wrong, should backboards be painted matt black?
Any thoughts out there.
Cheers

This subject has been discussed previously - try a search. The requirement for black backboards is relatively recent, sometime in the 1970s I think but the answer is on here somewhere!

Depends upon the year you are building the model to represent.     Modern regulations = black.  older regulations = coloured.

So you need to find the regulations that correspond to the period of your boat.

Hi Guys
Thanks Colin, Regs were updated in 1972.
I do understand a build has to conform to the period but a quick flip through the two popular mags
and various pondsides shows models after that date with coloured boards.
I did do a search but couldn't find the topic.
Just thought I would flag it up.
Cheers

People do consistently get it wrong!
