copper shroud plates
« on: February 15, 2010, 07:01:52 pm »

Hi everyone, the next stage of my 52" schooner
I have been making copper shroud plates to hold the shrouds to the hull, would someone tell me when to fit these, is it before priming and then paint the hull, or after painting, the hull is single planked and fibre glassed inside and out it has been rubbed down to a good finish prior to priming

And I think I'd paint the beautiful copper black, as the plates would have been made of black iron.(I think!)

HI Tobyker
thanks for pointing that out, I hadn't thought about the copper, I am still concerned about the hull, if I paint the hull and the paint lifts will it also lift the plates, if I glue and pin the plates prior to painting don't you think this would be stronger, I can only get it wrong once and I could set myself up with a lot of work.
building from scratch and working without plans or instructions, there are times when I need all you forum experts advice

If you paint first, and the plates rip off, you will rip off the hull paint as well. and leave bare hull.

My book said paint hull as soon as it is finished, befoere you do other work.

As far as the plates are concerned, may I suggest chemically blackening them rather than painting them. Copper can be hard to make paint adhere to, while chemically blackening copper is there forever. You'll find blackening chemicals in the model railway section of the hobby store.

Hi boy from the bay and John
I'm still not sure, but I am worried about pulling the paint off the hull, I do like the idea of chemically blackening the plates, it does seem which ever way I go the paint could be ripped off, if I black the plates I will need to paint first and this does seem to be the best way
thanks for your replies Geoff
