Any cycle experts about?

I've just bought four cycle wheel spokes to use as propshafts...stainless steel, plenty long enough, fit my prop tubes a treat...14gauge in size. I thought they were threaded 2mm...now I'm not so sure.

Questions:

(a) what does 14 gauge equate to in feet and inches? I can just about do metric if needs be...
(b) what thread would they be likely to be?
(c) where can I buy (as in beg, borrow or steal) four nuts to fit my spokes?

Hi Rich, I used to work in a cycle shop, Russells of York, before I joined the Navy and if I remember correctly , 14gauge equals 2mm...

13 gauge = 2.3mm

14 gauge = 2.0mm

15 gauge = 1.8mm

16 gauge = 1.6mm

I'm blowed if I can remember what the thread was, mind I have that problem all the time.
I seem to remember that there were some nuts that could be used instead of the nipples, ( sorry moderater) that are normally used..

That's a start Smudge, thanks very much for your help. Looks like a little rethreading job for our sole remaining fitter on Monday then...they don't seem to be a common thread.

I would have thought the threads would be Imperial either BSF or Whit
as bike wheels were sized in inches ? IMHO!

It's most strange Ned...I've been trying a few nuts and things on the spokes, and the nearest I can get is a fag paper shy of the threaded screw holes in a 280 motor. Whatever they are threaded, my spokes are a smidge too small. If I can now find out what those threads are and subtract a fag paper, I'll be almost there.

Now according to the great man's website http://www.action-electronics.co.uk/pdfs/MOTORS01.pdf the 280 is threaded M2.3, so I'm guessing my spokes are (minus the proverbial fag paper) M2 perhaps? Whatever that equates to in English...

I've just tried a 2mm prop on the spokes and it's too small, the prop won't screw onto the threaded portion of the spoke.

Hi again Rich, I have found in an old manual on bike repair that the tread on 14 gauge spokes is 2.2 x 56 tpi, that's a rolled thread,not cut.. Smudge

Aha..now that's interesting, I found a website where it stated something about rolled threads. So, it's likely that I need 2.2mm nuts then...that's gonna be fun finding those.

I think the best bet is to cut a known thread siize
I would be inclined to run a M2 die over the spoke end and see where that takes you

That'll be easier said than done...I don't possess equipment such as that any longer, that went with the house/workshop/wife.

Maybe I should buy four new shafts and tubes...seems expensive though just for four nuts.

Don't the threaded spokes have their OWN threaded capture nuts to secure them to the Bicycle rim.

I seem to remember my Father realigning a wheel when I was a child by tightening and loosening them on the wheel rotated on a jig. The nuts had tapered heads on them with screwdriver slots in. (a bit like a golf tee).

If you had these, then you could trim off the tapered top to have the correct size nuts.

I haven't a clue to be honest Ken, you could well be correct. I'll go down the local cycle shop in the morning and see what they can can up with. Seems silly not to be able to get the nuts...watch this space, I'll report back in the morning.

Yep, that'll be the very things Dickie boy...I only want four though, not thirty six.

Think I'll have a walk round the estate later, bound be a bike laying around somewhere. As we old (ex) sweeper drivers say...'where's a wheel there's a bike...'

The problem has been solved, gentlemen....I bought four common or garden M4 propshafts, I got fed up mucking about with bicycle spokes and odd sized threads. It'll be much easier to obtain props to suit M4 shafts than it would have been to get props threaded to 2.3mm.

Shafts arrived today, in the process of fitting them now. Oh..and the props arrived as well, they fit perfectly.
