Acrylics Beware
« on: December 18, 2006, 09:35:07 pm »

Decided to spray a large hatch cover white it was originally silver, most new acrylics are water based, and safe to use,
ie enamel over acrylic or vice versa, Thick me did not read small print on can, till  it was too late "clean spray head with cellulose thinners" Yes I did know, never spray or brush cellulose paint over enamel.
One gooey mess, took me 4 hours to remove sand and clean. Theres two types of Acrylic so Beware.
Moral Always read small print first.

Hi dazzle,

In both feet first, (me that is)

Just because it says use cellulose thinners, could this be just to dissolve the old paint may be.

There have been lots of threads on this forum where the original paint has been used to touch up a scratch with the same result. I applied a second coat of Plasti-kote enamel to a new model, with this result. So it may not be down to you.

Hi BobF, Sorry for late reply only just got on forum, due to its tech problem, three main types of paint are
water based, oil based, and cellulose based, normal guide is what to wash the brushes in, Hot water,
white spirit/turps,  or cellulose thinners, If only the manufacterers would put on the tin what the main base of paint was.
Only one I saw that ever did was a water based radiator enamel, I always thought all enamels were oil based.
I am going to use white plasticote spray on a f/glass hull and brush over that with ronseal hardglaze clear varnish.
Will definately try both on a scrap bit of wood or card.
Best Regards
