5-String Banjo & Guitar
« on: February 11, 2010, 03:08:55 pm »

Being an unreformed folkie, I play US & UK folk music/sea chanties/Napoleonics on a 1980s Wildwood banjo, 1990 Martin D-42 guitar, 1964 Martin 00-21NY guitar and, from time to time, a pair of mountain dulcimers. My wife, Caroline, joins in on guitar, recorders, tin whistles, border pipes, and Scottish small pipes.

No I haven't--hadn't even thought about it. I'll have to see if Caroline can get a good enough video with her camera. Thanks for the thought.

In that case, if either of you ever find yourself around this neck of the woods, then feel free to drop in for a beer or three.

Ah, the illustrious Bon Scott.
Turn on, tune up, take off.......

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tvNA5MtV7c

Such a shame about that neck. Easily repairable, but it just wouldn't be the same without Mr Scott's dabs on the fretboard.

If ever you wanna sell, name your price.

OK, as long as we're doing "show and tell", here's my lot:

Left to right, there's a 1990 Martin D42, 1974 Takamine F-400 12-string, 1920s Vega 4-string plectrum banjo, 1964 Martin 00-21NY, 1985 Wildwood 5-string banjo, and on the floor an unknown make mountain dulcimer on the left, and 1999 McSpadden mountain dulcimer on the right.

Derek,
I'm not 100% certain, but yes, very possibly a Gretsch (or maybe even a Hofner?).
By the by, the www.mainstream.co.uk url is not as it seems.

John,
What a gorgeous little setup you have there. I have never played one, I would not know where to begin even, but would dearly love to try one of your dulcimers.
As for your F-400, I could listen to the sounds of the 12-string'er all day long.
Nice, nice!
If it's not too much trouble, is there a chance you could post a picture of your wife's whistles and pipes?
And when do we get to hear/see the video?

Blame it on a certain Action man slave-driving me into loads and loads of lines of assembler language. I'm still seeing mnemonics even now... hence that dodgy 'R' in steam.

Not quite ACTion Man, my dear chap - blame it on Martin Doon Under and BillD203 for asking the almost-impossible - I know of no-one better equipped to produce it than your good self. Now - does anyone know of a smiley with its fingers down its throat?   ;D

BTW my six-string acoustic was made by an Aussie genius called Roy Scott in 1972. Haven't played it in years, though. It was the third guitar he'd made; John Williams had the fourth (yes, dude - THAT John Williams). I also have a 12-string Kimbara which I swapped for a S/H Tamiya buggy when they were the dog's bits - 1976? Cheap as chips but it sounds like a full symphony orchestra if you hit it with a tortoise-shell pick!

Hy Guys
Just thought I would add mine into the mix.
Top Left
 Burns 12 string electric, Crafter 6 string elec/ acc, Takamine 6 string elec/acc Crafter 12 string elec/acc
Botto left
Burns Marque 6 string electric/ Eastwood Mandocaster/ Electric Fiddle/ 6 string Banjo,/ Crafter Mandolin/ Shine 6 string semi acc
I have used many different guitars over the years, but I have found the Crafter,s to be excellent for the Country Music that I do.
The Shine guitar on the end would make a good paddle.

Blimey!.. all that untapped talent out there!
Talking of Burns, have you ever played the Burns Flight - the so-called Delta-shaped guitar?

(Psst.... Any suggestions from anyone on how I might persuade FLJ to part with that Kimbara of his?)

If you look at the front page of youtube today, you'll see a friend of mine up on there :-))

I can't play guitars (or any instrument for that matter) to save my life... Took me a couple of weeks to learn one riff...

Andy, my heavy-metal learning days were put paid by my old man busting in the room with "TURN THAT B****Y REVERB OFF!", before pulling all the fuses out the fuse box. He had a thing about too much reverb, did my old man. Your friend would hate his guts.
Any gentleman would also advise her to back off the decibels before the dreaded tinitus has its evil way with her. Too bad I'm not a gentleman.
