2nd hand Boat rebuild.
« on: March 06, 2010, 10:41:28 pm »

Hi All,

Im currently reconditioning a wooden hull i got from ebay, you might recall the thread i started about the cracked rear section?
Well finnally I got it resinned up and hardened.

I wanted long run times so opted for a Graupner 720BB torque paired with a 7.2v Ni-Mh saddle pack.
I wanted quiet running so went with a ballraced shaft and spent a long long time getting it lined up etc with my pops to make sure it was spot on :)

The prop shaft is resined in place now and Im going to let it set for a good week before i look at it again.
I have a couple of questions though please.

1 - Is it safe to use wooden yacht varnish over epoxy resin.?
2 - I have a 2 blade 35mm prop to go on but am wondering if a 3 blade would give more speed.? Obviously at the expense of run time.

Im a tad confused, i will post pics of where i am with the boat so far, its going to be a bait boat, my second build as i wasnt impressed with my first attempt and wanted to do it better.
Anyhow any thoughts / hints on props would be grat please./
Some pics.

Cheers.
Keith

You will find that a 2 bladed prop will probably give you more speed than a 3 bladed one. :-))

Hi mate as far as i know yacht varnish should work ok on the epoxy maybe try it on some scrap wood first to be sure though,i use paints over it all the time and never had any problems wether they be acrylic or enamel  and ive used cellulose car paints too with zero problems. You can just use epoxy though instead of varnish,i use an old credit card to spread it on and scrape back off to keep it thin and prior to mixing the epoxy i let the two containers get warm near the radiator to get it runny.Once you have coated the hull wipe off exess with kitchen roll so it doesnt get too thick and build layers up sanding between each coat 3 should do it,once set wet sand with 400 wet and dry working down through 600 to 1000 and then buff it up and it should shine like a new penny.I almost forgot to say use 3 hr epoxy and let each coat cure propperly between coats.

Thanks for the tip.
I'll nip to my local tesco and get some of them mobile top-up credit cards :) free and perfect for the job of smoothing over the resin.

Thanks again.. First coat done, will leave to set 24hours then sand down and clean then re apply 2nd coat :)

Well some progress has been made allthough not all of it good.

I did my first coat of resin to the hull only to find that i had not keyed it enough and small patches of resin rubbed off with my thumb, so im going to have to spend a day rubbuing it down properly.

However i dad have chance to do a motor drain test in my parents bathtub and with my 2 blade 40mm prop the 720BB torque pulled just shy of 1.4Amps when connected to 7.2v 4500mAh ni-mh (Ansman) saddle pack. This gave a good amount of thrust as well which is a plus so im happy that my running times should be in excess of 2 hours from a full set of batteries.
