Information/Opinions required

Hello,

I hope this is in the right place.

At the weekend I rescued the model in the very poor photos attached from the bin. It was built from plans 45 years ago by one of my mothers neighbours. Basically something just stopped me from letting it go in the bin, although it is in a sad state, so much work must have gone into it I thought it deserved saving.

My query is I suppose should I have let it go in the bin? I know nothing about these sorts of models. Can anyone shed any light, give me any information. Do people just build them from plans or are they in kit form. Basically I know nothing (I used to build Airfix kits) please inform me :-)

I understand is a 17th Century Man O'war? Its approx 60cm to 70cm long.

Many many thanks for your time and any advice, thoughts.

Sorry to have to say that as it does not have sentimental value for you if it was me I would bin it.There are some wonderfull kits available today of this type of model  from the likes of Victory Models , Corel ,Caldercraft etc. that most good retailers stock. In my opinion you would be better investing your time and money in one of these.

If you don't fancy doing the work yourself, I'm sure there are people on ebay that would be interested.

Hi,

The model appears to me to be the "NORSK LOVE" ( I hope that is spelt right ) by Billings kit. I built the same model in 1972 and I beleive this kit is still available.

Hope this helps.

My non-experts advice, for what it is worth. If you wish to restore this model it will be a labour of love, but worth doing for the satisfaction. Restoration requires more patience and skills than building a new kit, or even scratch building.

Models like this are not worth a lot of money (despite what some people think), and so if you are not ready to restore it yourself I would suggest letting it go. Either put it on Ebay with no reserve and hope to get a few bob for it, or give it away to a modeller who likes restoring ships, or bin it. You could pay someone to restore it, but that would probably cost more than buying one in good condition.

My opinion: This model does look to be a genuine scale model of a real ship, built from a kit - definitely not one of the crude "model galleon" caricatures you still see for sale in seaside gift shops - and has obviously had a lot of work and attention put into it, particularly the rigging. (Some of the hull woodwork looks a bit crude, but this may just be due to the low-res photos and worn paint). It's definitely a mid 18th-century "ship of the line" warship - from the lion figurehead and the stern gallery shape it may be the Billing Boats "Norske Love" but I'd need to see more detailed photos to be certain.

I'd definitely say this model is worth more than just throwing in the bin - if nothing else, the fittings and rigging blocks could be salvageable for another project! If you're interested in trying to restore it yourself, I can give you some advice on useful books + web links. If not, then I'd definitely be very interested in buying it from you - I'd like to try building a wood model of a ship of the line from this period, having so far only built small craft like schooners and cutters. I have a fair amount of experience in restoring and repairing old, broken and poorly made models, both wood and plastic!

Alternatively, if you have an eBay account, then as other members have suggested, put it up for auction (probably in the "model kits\boats & ships" category) with a low starting price and you'll probably get some bids. If you do sell it on eBay, then I'd strongly recommend offering postage rather than "collection only" even if you need to find a large box to post it in; generally, low-value "collection only" items don't get much interest, if any.

Hello,

Thanks for the great responses!!!

I have done some more research and it does appear to be a "NORSK LOVE" mode by Billings. I am waiting for the plans from the person that built it, he says that he built it by hand from the plans rather than a kit.

I have also found one for sale on ebay so have been comparing pictures to see what is missing etc etc.

My thoughts at the moment are that I do not have the nescessary skills to even attempt a restoration of this model even if it worthwhile. I have been in contact with a model maker who teaches at a local showground and he knew what it was straight away and is interested in seeing it so will see what he says. If he is not interested I will offer to anyone on here or put on ebay.

Its been fascinating researching this etc and I now have an urge to start modelling again (on a small scale lol).

Anyway if anyone is interested I will update this over the weekend.

Thanks
Neil
