Paint disaster - help/advice needed
« on: March 29, 2010, 11:10:25 am »

Hi All, I have been very quiet lately due to my efforts to get the HMS Caesar underway. (Predreadnaught battleship 1896 based on Deans Marine Majestic class, Hannibal). All was going well until I tried to re paint the hull. As it was a part completed model and needed some repairs done with filler etc I had touched it up in some areas with some red oxide paint - no problems. The hull was originally in Victorian colours but as my Grandfather sailed on it in 1908 I wanted it in grey. Everything was rubbed own and Humbrol matt grey applied - no problem. Then when I applied the Humbrol red to the rest of the hull it would not dry. It stayed tacky from Friday until Sunday afternoon. Believe it or not the rain stopped and the sun came out. So out it went for a couple of hours 'UV treatment'. All seemed well as it seemed to dry, tackiness went. The coverage was not good so a second coat was planned. I rubbed it down again and all seemed ok until I wiped it over with a cloth dampened with white spirit. Oh dear it started to break up and I spent the remaining daylight cleaning it all off. Have I been totally stupid? Did I paint over an acrylic? Can the paint be at fault? What do I do now? All suggestions gratefully received. Including any on how to keep my sanity. Cheers, Graham.

I have had a suspicion for some time that the Hornby, chinese made "Humbrol" paint is of a very inferior quality to that of the original Marfleet Humbrol paint and have found on a couple of occasions that they are not compatible. I now try to make sure that I am either using the original Humbrol for all paint applications where overcoating is required or all the new stuff and don't mix them.
I know Humbrol is conveniently available but there are several other paint manufacturers for the model trade and the quality of most of them is superior.

Hello, I have had a similar experience, I sanded down, then purchased from our local 'carparts' dealer a spray can of paint sealer. When dry, this allows you to apply any other type of paint over the top without a reaction. May be worth a try...can't remember the name of the sealer...sold in the 'car spray' paint section. mick.

Thanks for the replies guys. I did a test with the paint today and painted a test strip on some scrap materilas. It looks like it doing the same and not drying. It has been suggested thtat if the paint has been badly stored and subject to frost it could be no good. Cheers, Graham
