Battery charger

When I bought my 6v Gell Cell battery, the charger they gave me says on it 12v 400 ma.
               Seems to charge the battery OK, but the charger does get HOT !
                  Is this normal  ? (it's the type that plug's straight in a wall socket).

It's quite normal if you use the wrong charger. 6v SLA batteries need 6v SLA chargers.

How dumb is that!
                 I bought the charger years ago, and never gave it a thought !
                     Could using it have damaged my battery in any way ( only charged it twice)?

What about damage to a mains charger?
 
It may be that your charger is electronically current limited to 400mA and the heat came from a regulator on a heat sink.
or...
The simplest ones have nothing more than a bi-metallic switch and thermal fuse buried within or adjacent to the mains coil of the step down transformer.I dismantled a batch of those to find in some that the thermal fuse had not ruptured before the mains transformer turned to popcorn.
  All had been set to 12 apparently because the user noted the off load output on the six volt setting was four volts.Another case of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing.

                    I'm not to concerned about the charger, as I dont think it cost much.
                       I was just hoping that the battery is OK.
                         After being on charge for about 5 hours, the battery was barely warm,
                           so I'm hoping theres no damaged caused.
