Help please
« on: April 05, 2010, 11:42:22 am »

I have bought a used Riva Riviera which I admire greatly but...
I found that the motor/coupling/prop-shaft were not aligned correctly as the motor sits on a rubber pad of some sorts, meaning that an extra turn of a screw pushes the motor in that direction.
I noticed when first running the motor that it didn't purr quietly and that it made a rrrrddd sound. On examination I found that the prop-shaft was slightly bent and that both plastic inserts in the tube were of an oval shape, meaning the shaft had over time wore them out allowing the shaft to vibrate.
I have now found that I can't buy the inserts separately and I need to replace the whole prop shaft and tube.

I started dis-mantling the innards, then found that the tube was in-cased in a white hard substance (Cascamite?) Please could someone advise me the best way to remove the existing aluminium tube without damaging the boat? I have a feeling that I'm about to embark on a mission of destruction..... <:( <:(

Thanks

What diametre is the existing tube? And would it be possible so slide a thinner one down it to save ripping it out as that does not seem like a good option looking at the pictures.

I've already tried the insets from other tubes I have, but they're all to small. The inside dia of the tube is about 6mm so puting another tube inside is not possible, I don't think anyway....

If you have access to a small lathe it would be quite easy to turn up new bushes to fit each end of the tube, drilled and reamed to suit a new propeller shaft. There would be no danger of damaging the boat this way.

As a very last resort, you could do what I do. put the front of the boat upright between your legs and whack the end of the shaft with a hammer. I've never damaged a model doing it yet.

SHG used to have bushes in their catalogue. You should be able to buy some that will fit your existing tube and shaft! Don't know if they are on their web site, and I don't have one of their catalogues handy, but a telephone call after the holidays should get an answer.
