I too buy both mags and am usually disappointed by one or other of them each time.? ?That still doesn't prevent me from splashing out nearly eight pounds each month and I've yet to build a boat!

Of all available mags though, I prefer Model Shipwright - expensive but worth it just for Positive's articles.

Charles H

Hello all, as stated by Charles H above the variety of the magazines is sufficient to get me to buy the each month (from the local newsagent) and Model Shipwright by subscription (no one locally stocks it! ) Not everything in these magazines will appeal in any particular issue but there is sufficient interest to ensure that I keep on geting them even if I were to concentrate on only one I'd be hard pressed to choose which, probably stick with MB though. The plans which come with the Model Shipwright alone are worth the money each quarter and yet I still find it hard to read some of the articles, with the exception of Positives, and the appeal of me actually costructing a square rigged ship is remote in the least! However I can honestly say that seeing other peoples marvellous masterpieces is sufficient to keeep me striving for better workmanship in my endeavours. Long may all of these magazines and journals continue to prosper!

cheers

Jim

Thanks Capt Ron. I will get my former office colleague to try and get me that one - he was responsible for me subscribing to RCBM 10 years ago. He looked recently for me on alternative magazines but did not come across that one.

As a contributer of plans etc to all three model magazines mentioned I have no influence the editors final choice of content. I would however prefer that the content concentrates more on plans or photos of models of actual or realistic replicas of vessels of all types. With all respect to that fratrenity, who produce extremely well made and techinally superb "models", I   can never see the point of showing a photos of a minute representation of a  hydro or fast skimmer in a coud of spray, but I suppose it takes all kinds and can never satisfy everyone.
That said I am sure there is a considerable pull to support the various advertisers who possibly make up the major part of their revenue.

I suppose there will always be a degree of commercial consideration but I think the Editors do in fact get a pretty free hand. We all have our own particular areas of interest and I am personally very much in Jim's camp but "Model Boating" is a pretty wide term and if there is good support for hydros and the competitive side then they deserve to have space as well.  I know Paul Freshney is hoping to have more coverage of model yachting in future.

The other key factor, as Paul has said to me, is that if people don't write it, he can't print it and there is more than one branch of the hobby where contributors are very thin on the ground at the moment.

Unless you are in a specialist category such as Model Shipwright, every issue is going to contain a mix of articles, some of which will be of little interest to you. It's no different with your daily newspaper or the TV schedules really!
