I was quite surprised to see this photo on the Wicksteed thread:

It was this picture, or one very much like it, that started me on the slippery slope to a lifetime in electronics. I think it must have been published in about 1955 and had an accompanying article about the radio which used battery filament valves. Old battery valve radios could be had cheaply by then and I cannibalised several to make my own version of the 6-valve superhet receiver. It never worked, of course, and I never did get to own a working scale ship like the one the little boys and girls are admiring.
How things have changed. And not changed.
Does anyone know more about the picture and (if it's the same one) the accompanying article?
