 i am new to boat building, i have fitted the motor ,coupler, shaft and prop, all new but ,very noisy.
 there does seem to be play on both the motor and coupler,not a lot, but could this be problem.
sorry guys i should have mentioned its a ply hull.
any ideas anyone, im getting laughed at.

If you disconnect the coupling, does the motor run quiet at full revs?

hi martin,
 thanks for the reply, the motor does seem to run quieter when run without being connected,when i tied this i checked the coupler but only by hand ,and it too seemed ok.

Bizarrely, the lesser spotted, to all intents and purposes identical, black version available via J Perkins Distribution is *much* quieter, I suspect the red ones have an eccentricity moulded in somehow....

Replaceing the central portion ( the X piece) with a suitable silicon tube can quiten things down a bit,  model shop aircraft glo engine exhaust tubing pushed over splines.

possibly a stupid suggestion but how accurate have you got the shaft to motor aligned

the problem I had was the same as descirbed here and I found the red coupling to be
the fault - mass produced by china

I was told and found to make a huge differance was to put heat shrink tubing over the
red coupling and shrink it on as it tightens up the coupling the noise has now disappeared 

I would recommend where possible to use the ones MMB sell easy to use and not hassle
of fitting the heat shrink

hi robert , yes the coupling is red abd it does seem to have a fair bit of movement, which i suspect is the cause of my noise.
do you have the address of the place i can order the black one from,

Cost ? Silicon tube free or pennies.

2 other things to check,
Connect up the motor, coupling & shaft but not the propeller, is it still noisy?
Pull the shaft out, does it roll smoothly across a flat surface?

tried the silcone, the speed creates a bow before the silicone explodes,anyway it was still niosy.
martin ,thanks again ive just taken the prop out,removed thepropeller ,and rolled it,
it was possibly the most accurate part of boat. i do beleive the uni coupler to be the culprit,
so ill send for another one and give it a try, thanks again , pete

Hello Pete,

Just about every model shop in the country has an account with J Perkins http://jperkinsdistribution.co.uk/ put 'coupling' into JP's search box, and it should show you a small pic of it, scan down the page to '5511898 UNIVERSAL JOINT COUPLING' and that should be what is required. I do suggest you first try out the suggestions regarding the silicone tube and rolling the propshafts on a flat surface (I know she doesn't read this so I'm safe saying I check mine on my Wife's shiny new kitchen hob....)

Cornwall Model Boats do Raboesch Couplings (Universal Joints & Inserts) same sort of thing but better quality.

thanks  to all who have replied,  i have rolled the propshaft, and checked it with a steel ruler , it seems ok,
i will contact mark on tuesday as i am now going away for the weekend.
you have to give in to them somtimes, so we can then spend the rest of our time doing what we want.
