Krick Victoria, advice on engines
« on: November 05, 2009, 09:07:17 pm »

Hello again. Although I thought I'd convinced the wife that a Fantail was the ideal starter launch, she had other plans. %)

We have ordered a Krick Victoria with a view to spending considerably more, and building it over a longer period of time, but having a better model at the end of it.

My query is:

I know I could save up the necessary and buy a complete engine/boiler unit as one, but I would rather buy components over time and put it together myself as I go. I have seen a side valve TVR1A engine on Fleabay which looks just the ticket, but as this is my 1st steam model, I'm not sure I'm right, and would have no idea where to start when it comes to boiler etc.

Sooooo..... All advice welcome :embarrassed:

if you then go to   http://www.maccsteam.com/  for the rest you will have a good plant ..

Wow! Seems that £245 for the engine plus £273 for a fully fitted boiler is quite a saving on a complete one (over £200 compared to Krick victor engine). Have I got that right, are there any extras? Is this engine powerful enough? {:-{

er go to     http://www.xe.com/ucc/  and convert the $ to £ first and get a supprise the postage is not that great..  there may be a few bits and pieces not big but you will need a gas tank or a adapter to use small gas cans direct but keep the first engine simple you will need 3 channel radio as well and you will have a far better engine than the crick

The engine is ideal for what you have in mind. I have had several engines from Robert and he is good to deal with and the engine is easy to assemble. Maccsteam will sort out a boiler for you and in an easily driven hull you will not need a very large one. There are several other items you will need such as a throttle control valve from Bruce Engineering and a steam valve but they are all readily available and nice quality so if you build it up a bit at a time you will end up with a very nice unit. Mount the engine and boiler on a single alloy plate with a small lip bent up around the edges to contain any mess and use double universals so the engine can sit flat on the base. I would go for one of the new cheap 2.4G radios discussed elswhere on the forum, they give you multiple channels for steering, throttle, reverse and maybe later a steam whistle and you do not have to worry about frequency clashes with other boats. Of course you can always come back with more questions as you progress. Go for it, steam is much more enjoyable than all the easy options. Cheers, Ian.

well, i've ordered an unused, factory made TVR1A from Keith at Mainsteam for £199. He took it in px and it isn't even run in yet. (BTW what do I need to run it in?) It should be here early next week, as will my Krick Victoria. :}

I am bed-wettingly excited and have been told to have a lie down in a darkened room by the wife. I will need more advice, and plenty of it in the future, but for now, it's just a waiting game.

the best way to run it in is to build your steam plant and bench run the engine nice and slow, give it a few boiler fills running well oiled, I don't like running them on air as "I" don't think they get the right amount of oil or expansion due to heat and don't like turning them over by an external source because all the forces are in the wrong places .
just use GOOD model steam oil it is not expensive and use it liberally on all moving parts as well as in the oiler.

Unfortunately you haven't got the full length of the hull to play with as you have a cabin taking up about a third of it.  I don't think you would get a horizontal boiler in a Victoria.

I did away with the cabin on my Victoria and moved the engine placement more towards the center of the hull. She's still a work in progress. I'm hoping to finish her up soon.

Very neat boat, perfect to show the steam plant off.
I was wondering what the thing to the left of the safety valve is, an anti-vacuum valve perhaps?

That's exactly what it is, a vacuum breaker.

Hi,
 Sorry to be a pain but I am receiving conflicting information as to whether a horizontal boiler will fit in the standard Victoria. Any thoughts ideas as I think the boat look great. Bill

A horizontal boiler will not fit if you include the cabin.  If you do not have the cabin fitted you might be able to fit a horizontal boiler however I suspect it will still be a challenge to get it in.  This hull is not large and a vertical boiler would be a lot easier either way.

Here's my Victoria launch without the cabin, looked a lot better.
