Reua Hang Yao (Long Tail Boat)
« on: June 06, 2010, 09:21:25 pm »

Via email to Mayhem...

My Reua Hang Yao (Long Tail Boat).

On my first visit to Thailand, Long Tails were just part of the scenery but on my second visit I fell in love with them and decided that a RC model just had to be made.
When I returned home I contacted model shops in the UK and Asia to get hold of some plans, but none were available. So based on my memory, photos I had taken and the dimensions for the length, Beam, Depth and Draught of a full size boat I found on an internet site I created a set and built one.
The attached photos show the results of my efforts.
If I was to build another one there are a few changes to sizes that need to be made to remove some scale effect issues, but over all I am very pleased with how it looks and performs on the water.

Regards,
Geoff  (The Red Dragon).

I like to build my boats to play with, not to just look pretty, so they dont !

Looks good and brings back a yearning for Phuket.

About five years ago a chum wanted a long tail, it would have cost about 50,000 baht (1000 pounds stirling) to get a thirty-foot boat built-to-order.  Cheaper than many plywood jobbies.

I like the way you've done the motor - full-size they vary from a smokey one-lunger to V-8 monsters.

I wonder how many other old sea dogs are reminded of Bangkok, running moors and mama san heading for the gangway with her brood  ;)
Nice looking model and very ingenious solution to the steering problem.

Its looking even nicer these day after being re-fitted with a smaller motor and a nice white canopy.
By the way Geof as a solution to your scale person problem how about something like this..........

Does anyone know anything about the origin of long tail boats? Wikipedia suggests that they are native to South-East Asia, but since when? The German army used the same idea for an assault boat in World War II.
