Solid couplings
« on: June 20, 2010, 03:32:09 pm »

Where can I buy a solid 2mm coupling from? Huco types are too big for what I want. I'm putting together a very small wooden boat and everything needs to be small...2mm prop shaft, 2mm motor shaft.
Cheers

Why not use plastic or rubber tubing? You can buy special rubber tubing from SHG and others (I think Robbe list some), or try stripping the insulation of a spare length of electric cable and using that. Unless you have a very high load it will work fine.

Hmmm....
The intended motor will be from a slot car, 25,000rpm and running between 12 - 15 volts. I am going to use a 3 or 4 cell Lipo battery (Only because I have plenty of them from my helicopter and plane days) It is an experiment really, but as the boat will be only 12 -14 inches long, similar to the Keil Kraft ones, I'm not sure a piece of tubing will be strong enough? But I don't know, it might be, other than that, are there smaller flexible couplings on the market?

Hi Nige, give me a ring on - please see website for full contact details - http://marksmodelbits.com/
I can do a solid or flexible coupling no probs.

Mark.

I looked for such conectors - didn't find anything obvious. The difficulty at high revs is balance, and a lot of the proprietary connectors don't seem to be balanced very well anyway...

If you pick strong plastic tubing and match the inner size closely - I use discarded wire insulation which lets me pick sizes quite well - then get the ends of the shaft and the motor nearly touching before you slide it on, there will be less tendency for the plastic to get flung around by centrifugal force.

You could always cyano a length of brass over the tubing if you can get the right diameter. For small boats weight is important, and I have had no problems with my experiments using plastic tube...

You find about 100 of them in each packet of Johnson's cotton buds.  Remove bit of cotton wool, cut to length.  For a bit of extra security, you can always get a collar thats a push fit over the out of the bud sleeve and grub screw it down.  I got mine from Red Bank, but its only a quarter hour walk for me, so no mail order problems.
Is this boat meant to chug around and look cool, or hurtle?
