I'd highly recommend one of the smaller, cheaper Caldercraft kits (Ballahoo, Chatham, Sherbourne etc.) as a "first kit" for a beginner to wooden sailing ship modelling. The level of historic accuracy, materials quality, and parts fit/engineering in their kits really is on a different level to most of the other well-known manufacturers (Mantua, Constructo, Artesania Latina etc.).
They're also ideal subjects for a first-time builder, as they're small, relatively simple craft without too much rigging, in a relatively large scale (1/64).
