Anyone Recommend a Ready Built Boat?
« on: April 11, 2010, 01:02:06 pm »

Hi All

I am just about to start building my Modelslipway Loyal Class, and I wondered if anyone
could recommend something ready made for me to play with at the club whils I am
building mine.

It's not much fun going to the club with nothing to sail.

Open to suggestions regarding what sort of model.

Thanks

Alan

Thanks John

I did have a look at the Howes website but I wondered if there were any other sites
with different models?

Has anyone got one of the Howes models, and can you give an opinion please.

Thanks

The fishing boats and the Southampton tug are quite liked on there.   :-))

Keep an eye on Ebay. I recently bought a Lesro TID tug, nicely made and complete with everything for £45, I was the only bidder.

Alan,

I own a Southampton (Southy) tug which is mentioned earlier in this thread. A full report was featured in Model Boats magazine of November 2004. Review by Terry Small.
After owning one for some time my own thoughts are - battery life is limited (15 mins run time per charge), poor turning circle (can be simply overcome by adding clear plastic rudder extensions). Approx 3 - 4 hours will be required to attach the tyres. Otherwise this is a splendid RTR model.
The Southy looks like an r/c model and not a toy, as can be an issue with lower cost RTR craft.

I Have a Southampton which I have modified a bit by cutting down the lower superstructure, I have also replaced the steering servo and replaced the ESC with two 15amp viperd (M Tronics ) and put a 3.5 amp hour battery in her, She goes very well and is very agile, she even pulls our 16ft towboat with no trouble.  for the money a brilliant little boat.

i would suggest 1 of those thunder tiger fishing boats, i bought 1 called lob master. superb rtr boats runs on a 6v 4.5ah lead acid battery and you get hours of running time and the finish and detail are superb. great manuverability and quite nippy too. i bought mine for £99 but think they are now around £160 ish, check out sussex model centre.

H All

I had a look at SMC but I could only find warships.

Howes Models seem to have the Lobster/Fishing boats and at good prices.

Would someone like to comment as to why one of the tugs is £35,yet the
Southampton is £139,what's the difference?

Thanks

Hello Alan         The Southampton is really a ready built model not a toy looking boat,it also comes with a proper radio set with changeable crystals not a toytown set that you do not know what frequency you are on and that only has a range of 25 yards on a good day. as they say you pays your money and takes your choice. %) %) %).

my brother has just bought one of the £ 35 tugs and there really is a difference in build quality between it and the Southampton.

all the best    tugmad

For a good insight into the £35 tugs, see the "Seaport tug" section of the main forum topics

The RTR 'Souhampton' - I've posted piccies of mine on here but here you go anyway.

Slightly modified - white metal winch, H bitts and an A frame - but more importantly, completely gutted electonics and replaced fully by a set from Action Electronics - see my thread in chit-chat on independent steering.

A good model, ripe for conversion, fairly cheap, easily modified - and very, very stable and dry!

Thanks for the pictures everyone.

I would presume with all the mods taking place that access to the
inside of the hull is easy and quite spacious?

Ian, the whole deck of the 'Southampton' comes off (as does the wheelhouse. Inside you have tons of room!

She also comes with a good access hatch on the afterdeck and also one forward, under the wheelhouse. Both are waterproof. One member on here turned his turtle at a towing regatta and she was dry as a bone inside when he got her back.

There is enough room for a bow thruster if you want to fit one!

A good buy. So good, in fact, I am about to purchase my second for gutting and modernisation - new wheelhouse, new fittings, paint job and name - and of course complete new electrics.
